Competitive balance?
The Detroit Lions are one of the original NFL teams, established in 1930.
They are the only team around since Super Bowl 1 to not ever play in the Super Bowl.
They were the first 0-16 team.
All these high draft picks haven’t quite worked out for them.
They do have free agency and that really drives the NBA.
If there was no draft and it was a free-for-all to sign players, wouldn’t that be more interesting?
A company hiring is like a slave auction for the matrix.

Most employees are not required to strip down and get measured.
But yes, employees are a class of slaves

It's not about balance.
It's about the owners having the power
The NFL is nothing like the big European football (soccer) leagues in the way that they buy and sell all players throughout their careers. For all but a few, you have very little say as to where you will go. Even their young players that belong to clubs are raised up, developed, and then sold like cattle during the transfer window.

What other profession besides sports do you get drafted and traded and told where you have to work?
World War 2 veterans were drafted and paid $50 per month to fight in places like the Solomon Islands, North Africa, and Burma, to fly bombing mission through a hornet's nest of anti-aircraft fire over Germany, to dodge depth charges in a submarine, to parachute into Normandy, to storm the beaches at Iwo Jima.
I think being paid $millions$ and being "forced" to work in places like Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Phoenix, or Atlanta is a slightly better draft result.
