I think he would’ve been fine under Vanhoy. From what I can remember as an SEC fan, Vanhoy coached John Rivera, similar type of runner to Flatt, both 400/800 guys. Rivera ended up running 1:45 low.
I don’t know if this has been mentioned yet on the thread. But Ole miss’ sprints coach holland shearer was an 800m runner for ole miss and I believe was an all-American. Why not let him have a crack at coaching Cade flatt? He mat do better with the Sprints coach with a 400/800 training plan.
I expected more from someone who advertised himself as the “best ever” but that’s just me.
He's more than just cocky, he's just a straight up prick and he doesn't deserve to progress any further
He was a colossal bellend, but he was a young lad and I feel for him now. Everywhere he looks he must feel like people are laughing at him and that’s a brutal thing to deal with.
He needed bringing down a peg or two, not to be ground into the dirt.
It's perplexing. Coach should tell him he HAS to finish no matter what.
I also agree he HAS to go for a negative split. I'm a big fan of the negative split.
It’s crazy that he gets away with doing it as often as he does.
My coach would’ve been absolutely livid with me DNFing an 800m unless I was injured. I feel like most highschool let alone college coaches would and should be. DNFing a 5k/10k is a different story, because if you’re having a rough day you are gonna over exert yourself and feel it for the next 3-4 days, it’s a smart tactical decision to DNF if it’s not going your way. You’re 90% recovered from an 800m in 1-2 hours and running on overly lactic legs is a great training stimulus for 400/800/1500 runners.
I’m a believer that in the 800m, if you want to be a warrior in the event you have to be willing to die like a warrior in the event. You go out too hard? Everyone gets to watch you limp the final 100m in 18 seconds. That’s just how it goes and if you can’t handle that you should run a different event.
I also predicted this behavior from Flatt due to his arrogance and dominance in highschool. It’s easy to be a confident racer when no one beats you, when there’s 3-5 people in your heat every meet who have a shot at you it’s an entirely different game. Watching someone blow past you and opening a 3-4 second gap on you in that final stretch is demoralizing when you aren’t used to it.

Idk man if he would he running 1:46 that wouldnt be the case until nationals.
in Hs he went race pros in NYC and got second place I believe. Hes just in the wrong system. A&M would be a better fit as well
None of us here actually knows what he's been doing in college, what his injuries have been, and what his workouts have been. Bottom line is that he should have gone to a school like Georgia (in 2022-23) or Texas A & M where they know how to coach 400/800 guys. Converting guys downward from longer distances does not involve the same training at all, and he would not likely have flourished with Van Hoy's 800/1500 training.

Vanhoy can’t get sh!t from his talent at Cal Poly. No way he can do anything with Flatt.
Yes. They probably run the same mileage now, but while he's whining to himself in the weight room and taking grayscale photos of himself, she is out cross training like an animal. Champion's mindset.
I think he will be back. I watched him this season and he looked lean and fit. He has had some injury issues which it appears he is overcoming. Adam Smith is a great coach and i’m sure it is just a matter of time before it starts clicking again. Salhman said it best the difference between his performances last year and this year is that he is doing a lot of little stuff right like sleep. If i went to Ole Miss i wouldn’t sleep!!! The school gives a degree in fun for everyone attending.
