Shoes can help but also consider putting firm insoles into your shoes. You may need to buy half size larger shoes.
Get the higher arched Green Superfeet insoles and let your arches (by resting on the insoles) absorb some of the pounding that had been taken by the ball of the foot.
If that's not enough put a ball of foot cushion on the insole (placed somewhat behind the ball of the foot not right under it). Keep it in place with medical tape.
If you want your toes to absorb more of the shock and have more leverage during push offs (Morton's toe especially) buy some foam inserts (inexpensive on Amazon) to fit between the big and second toe. The somewhat splayed big toe has more power than when it's nudged against the second toe.
