Ben True soft retired recently and I haven't seen anything on here about it yet. He qualified for the Trials Marathon but had decided already to retire which is why he didn't run and hasn't been running as much since then (as can be seen on Strava).
Finished with PRs of 13:02 (pre super shoes) and 27:14. Finished 6th at World Cross, 6th at World Outdoors in the 5K, and finished 7th at the 2021 NYC Marathon in 2:12. Great career!
The lone wolf. He mostly did his own thing and would show up ready at the major meets. He had a ton of self-belief. That world XC result should rank higher than any of his other accomplishments IMO. You saw today how hard it is for any non-African to do anything at that race.

His outdoor 6th in the 5k is far more impressive. Outdoors always has much better competition.
Ben had a terrific career and should have never listened to the outside noise (and appearance dollars) and move to the marathon. EVERYONE IS NOT A MARATHONER. Ben was too big for the event.

He frequently goes dark on strava, and lots of northwoods athletes allude to running with Ben on their posts. This includes trail runner Eric LiPuma who ran a 50k training run today, at least some of it with Ben. Maybe he'll run some ultras for fun

Yes I'm getting my info from a different source than Strava. That said it seems like his decision to retire was roughly the same time he went dark on Strava, even though he is still running and not showing it on there

I agree that he had an impressive career. Would have liked to have seen him race a bit more often, but on the other hand, he seemed to know what he was doing.
However, I disagree that "everyone is not a marathoner". Some people are clearly good at the marathon. Kipchoge, for instance. Or did you mean "NOT EVERYONE is a marathoner"?

Winning Diamond League is serious business. Where the best of the best show up to go fast, no per-country limits, no rounds, no tactics. Okay there was tactics in True's race, which was bad tactics by those he outkicked.

In this podcast from this past spring, Ben explains he’s not interested in competing at the Olympics because unfortunately there’s no money in it. Sure, his sponsorship stock could go up but he said that he would much rater try to medal at a major. If we don’t see him in either Chicago or NYC marathons this fall, I think he may he done.
