Leachman is going after the outdoor HS national 5k record tomorrow at the Texas Relays. Current record is held by Natalie Cook in 15:25.93, but Leachman ran 15:28.9 at Nike Indoor Nationals. Should be super cool to see what she can do in a collegiate field outdoors.
I ran Texas Relays a couple of times post-collegiately and I barely got under 15:20 when super fit because weather always sucked. One year I ran 30:03 at Stanford and 32:12 at Texas Relays! She might be acclimated, but not a great place to run fast in March.
The guy who wrote that article didn't really know what he was talking about.
The college 5k race at Texas Relays doesn't have "stronger and faster" runners in it like the writer imagines that it does. The writer thinks that Leachman can just sit behind a group of college runners for much of the race. Nothing could be further from the truth. Leachman is waaaay faster than those college runners and she will take the lead very early in the race, and then run the rest of the race by herself. She will end up lapping most of the college runners.
In fact, the Nike 5k indoor race that Leachman ran a few weeks ago probably had stronger runners in it, even though they were all in high school.
The reason that Leachman is running this race, is because this is her only chance to run a 5k before all of her UIL meets start in early April. Then she is pretty much out of commission until early May, after her state meet.
By then, all the college 5k races are over, except for the 5k's at the conference meets in mid-May, which Leachman obviously can't run in.
After the Texas Relays, if Leachman wants to run another 5k this year, it will either be at a pro meet, at one of the outdoor high school national championships, or at the Olympic Trials, if she qualifies.
Her national record attempt at the Texas Relays will depend on the weather. Right now the forecast seems decent, so hopefully it is still decent at race time.
Leachman is in good enough shape to get the record if the weather is good.
I could see her getting it but i'll be surprised if she does. Texas relays is always really, really windy. That's gonna be tough to run 15:20 low in.

Can't she find a fast and flat road race with a decent (15:30-ish) male field?
Just saw that plus she's in the college/invitational heat, so there will be good pace.
Why do people make posts based on assumptions? No, there won't be a good pace, because none of the college runners are anywhere as good as Leachman is. Leachman will be running solo most of the race.
Do you have any idea how few female college runners in the country can run a 15:25 5k? Very, very few. And none of them are in tonight's race.
As far as running solo goes, Leachman just ran an indoor 5k in 15:28 running solo most of the race. She also broke the national 3200 twice, and ran solo both times. She is used to running solo.
As long as the weather is good, she should be able to break the record.
There are so many threads about high school kids not being allowed to compete against anyone other than high school kids. Obviously high school kids can compete in college races.

But you’re probably referring to the threads on California CIF rules specifically.
The California (CIF) rules only apply to meets with a separate High School Division. In those meets, a high school athlete, with remaining high school eligibility, could only compete in that division.

So were the rules changed from last year, when the Young twins were not allowed to run Arcadia? Because they participated in a Pro meet (for which I don’t know if there was a separate High School Division at that meet.)
