Ask anyone at LRC. You can only run fast at BU, because that track is soooo much faster than anywhere else!
Or, perhaps it's possible, that when people choose to try and run fast elsewhere (the Armory, The Track, Washington, Arkansas, etc.), they do.
I keep telling you guys, there's nothing special about the BU track. It's no faster than any other "fast" track.
Anyone else who was in shape for Nationals, or was in shape during this and past seasons with numerous invitational opportunities, could have run faster on what has been proven to be a LONG track. Go take your inferiority complex and cry in a corner.
Have you run on both tracks? BU is easily a second per mile faster than other banked tracks like New Balance. Of course a three second penalty in the 5k isn’t impossible to overcome if you have a good race or good competition.
It does matter when you need every last second to hit a standard. The pacing at the Terrier Classic 5k was about as good as you’re going to get, and there were several guys who ran 13:03 to 13:06 and just got the Olympic standard. They probably would have missed it if the race was at New Balance.
Maybe I’m missing something, but isn’t this on the track at new Balance, which is also in Boston, but is not the Boston University track?
Yes, but it's close enough to the BU track that there is some halo effect. Next year there will be conversions for altitude and flat track with 'penalties' applied for qualifiers in Boston.
This will improve the number of entries at regular meets around the country.

Find Geoff Burns’ article, he posts here sometimes. Not believing in the advantage of the BU track is the same as still not believing in the advantage of super shoes in 2024. She would run faster in a pro and rabbited race at BU, duh.
Anyways, as another poster made in the other valby thread, 14:52 isn’t that amazing. It’s a good time by a great runner. It’s 52 seconds off the outdoor WR and would have ranked 52nd in the world in 2023, same time Natosha Rogers ran. Nico’s 12:57 by both ranking and IAAF points scores way higher and there’s not 2 threads a day about him around here. Let her run and hopefully continue to develop. Post college/into trials season we’ll see if she’s a fully maximized cross trained athlete at her ceiling right now who finishes 8th on the Oly Trials or if she has another 30 seconds in the tank closing in 60 low in a 14:20s race to actually be competitive and not just another good American
Ok you just proved my point. 4:37 is the pace Monson ran for a full 5k to take 5th place in the London DL meet last season. So we should think somebody who ran 1 mile at that pace off a slow race is the next Olympic Medalist?

Valby ran 14:52 completely solo, no rabbits or other racers to draft behind. She was even giving thumbs up to her teammate in the long jump mid race. Add in the fact that she ran her 4:37 last mile completely in LANE 2 while lapping runners.
Nobody is saying she is the next Olympic medalist. This performance indicates sub 14:40 fitness, while Nico ran his 12:57 in a perfectly rabbited race. Valby has run nearly 40 seconds faster than Monson in college. That is significant.

What's with posters saying these records aren't amazing? We've had someone say that an 8:20 indoor 3000m isn't amazing when it was 3rd all time (!!) and now someone saying that 14:52 which is a collegiate record, the best ever in that category, isn't that amazing.

Everyone knows the BU track is likely fastest in the world. This is old news, not new news. Read the article and run on the track yourself. The pros know, which is why they make special trips halfway around the world to run at college meets so they can get Olympic qualifiers and break country and world records. And been doin it for years now. Coaches know, which is why they drag their teams from all over the country in the middle of January and February, heck even December to get qualifying times. Anyone who has run at the New Balance track or the Armory or anywhere else and the BU track in a mid distance or distance event knows. Competition matters. Super shoes matter. But the BU track trampoline effect matters. It’s a track design from a bygone area where wood structures were king. Athletes peak at certain times and of course may be more fit when they run end of season at a big meet, which may account for fast times on a slower track. Is this also new news?
