Nurmi competed in the pre-professional era against a handful of Europeans and Americans. He was dominant, yes, but he didn’t race anybody. He wouldn’t win todays high school cross country championship.
Also, I'm way more interested in seeing him tackle the 5k, 10k and half marathon than the 1500, but he's going to keep focusing on the 1500 as long as he's young.
Jakob is going to move down to the 800 as he gets older. That is what Nordas is doing.
On how winning gold in Tokyo was hollow but he quickly got back to work as he wants to be the GOAT
“(It would take) Five or six [Olympic] gold medals, to be better than all the different runners in all the disciplines. That would be the end of the discussion. And the goal is never to have the discussion again.”
Paavo Johannes Nurmi was a Finnish middle-distance and long-distance runner. He was called the "Flying Finn" or the "Phantom Finn", as he dominated distance running in the 1920s. Nurmi set 22 official world records at distances between 1,500 metres and 20 kilometres, and won nine gold and three silver medals in his 12 events in the Summer Olympic Games. At his peak, Nurmi was undefeated for 121 races at distances from 800 m upwards. Throughout his 14-year career, he remained unbeaten in cross country events and the 10,000 meters.
OK, in what world is Ingebrigtsen going to build up a resume that even gets him into a conversation about being the GOAT, let alone puts the conversation to bed?
He ran in an era when there was effectively no competition. The Olympics in the 1920s - 1930s had athletes from only 30 - 50 nations competing, population of first-world countries at the time had been devastated by an enormous war, and multiple countries were going through economic depressions. You don't get to be the greatest if you competed in an era where your competitors were garbage.

...did you read the opening post where Jakob himself says he's better at the long distance events and the 1500 is his worst event?

I'd be happy to hear other candidates that Jakob thinks he's chasing.
More importantly, what would the metric be that would allow him to end the conversation?
I;m not claiming that Nurmi is the GOAT, but he is far better than Jakob, and is just one of many runners.
Jakob introduced the idea that number of medals is the metric. So, fine, let's go with that. He'll never be in the neighborhood with Nurmi.
He didn’t say there’s a universal benchmark of medals to become the GOAT, just that given the state of things he needs about 5-6 to get there. I’m sure if he was alive in the 20s he’d say 15 was the bar because it probably was at that point. Half the dudes in those Olympic marathons probably thought chain smoking was a therapeutic use benefit.
Why does Norway produce the whiniest 1500 runners on the planet? Can not wait for Kerr to take it to Jakob at the Olympics and then hear a million excuses afterwards or some BS on why it doesn't count.
Or he could just say he screwed it up and ran bad as he said when he was beaten by Wightman. -Seems more like a self blame than an excuse to me…

OK, so who is the current GOAT and what does Jakob have to do, very specifically, to overtake that person?
(Maybe I'll stick with Nurmi, and Jakob will never catch him, but I am curious about other perspectives).
“If other athletes are not the same, I cannot respect them the way I respect myself."
This one line really sums up everything I find insufferable about Jakob. It's never enough to be confident in his own abilities, he just has to go out of his way to be disrespectful to everyone else, both past and present.
Anyway, I'm calling it now that neither Jakob nor Kerr wins gold in Paris. The two are obsessed with each other to the point where they forget the rest of the field. But the 1500 has never been deeper, and I think somebody else is gonna run a smarter tactical race in the final and take advantage.

Good question. I’d go bekele I guess, for WRs and dominance across 2 events in a super competitive era, plus extending that into cross and the marathon. Very difficult to pick a single GOAT still.
Hard to get into specifics when we don’t really know what events jakob will be running 4 years from now. But I’d guess for the Olympics- at least 1 more gold in the 15, 2-3 in the 5k/10k, and 2-3 WRs across those 3 events. He doesn’t have any WRs in core events yet, which hurts him right now because the shoes have an obvious advantage.
While I appreciate athletes doing these interviews as part of an effort to promote the sport, I'll be honest, I liked it better when he ran more and talked less.
Jakob is spot on about Kerr, who's just using Jakobs name to further his own.
Jakob has clocked 7 times faster than Kerrs PB, won the final at Tokyo where Kerr ran his PB, is 12-2 head to head, has the vastly superior medal count and this is in his off event while being far from his prime age. Jakob is competing against the history books, not the Brits.
I agree with you, but I think it’s 11-1 (can’t count heats where one doesn’t try to win)…
But I also sort of disagree, because Kerr is now fulfilling his words by letting his legs speak (not his fault that it’s not vs Jakob who has an injury pause from competition)…

But then we don’t get to watch someone go home with their tail between their legs

The American "Michael Phelps" powered with money.

To be considered GOAT you should have the American Gray Card.
Jakob hasn't been running indoors but he's been doing a lot of media talks. Britain's most prestigious paper
So what remained from Pavo Nurmi and Zlatopek and others like Peter Snell?
...
...
Myths favorized by the ultra-doping conditions of this dopage called wealthy countries..
In the other side you have the true heroes ... the bare-fooded ala Abebe Bikila who don't find what to eat.
Nonsense. Bikilia was the personal bodyguard to the emperor, and was able to train full time at altitude, 150 MPW with regular track sessions. This was when Western runners were amateur, parttime and running 50 MPW, and usually retired by 25. Running barefoot was probably faster back then for those who were used to it. Bikilia was faster barefoot and that is why he chose to run barefoot in Rome.

The future of the 1500m (mile for British and American) is African.
There is no doubt about it.
And as I wrote before it going to be crowded and more crowded in the mile util the day where come another generational record close 3min 24sec high.
But for this to happens the wealthy countries should help African talents. They don't want it. They want monopolizing African talents as its happening currently in Soccer with the changes of Allegiances.
You will find more talents like Habz, Katir oe the Moroocan/Spanish Lamine Yamal who run only for money.
Lol yeah the master narcissistic trash talking the lesser narcissist and complaining people are giving him attention as if that's how Kerr won a WC gold, and just broke a WR and won another gold. LOL. Jakob is going to have a hard time recovering if he gets beaten by Kerr again.
I don’t think you can give Jakob nor Josh (or anybody else) a narcissistic diagnosis based on some interviews…
And just for the record: There are a lot of different types of narcissism -some of them even sound and normal (we all have and must have some traits; part of being a human).
Malign narcissism is a b tch, and can be differentiated into a lot of groups. But there are no consensus among “experts” in this field. -The famous psychiatrists Kohut and Kernberg f.ex didn’t agree in (almost) anything here…
Projecting is another actual malign mechanism, meaning: Quite a few poses that others are narcissistic (partly) because they struggle with narcissism themselves…
Why does he keep bringing up Kerr all the time, dude is very insecure
I don’t know for sure. But maybe partially because Kerr assaulted his character (“high on himself”) and he just pays back because it would be strange (and dishonest) not to…
