is that prize money only or are you including bonuses from Brooks for world champ wins? What about bonuses for world records? Bonuses for British Champs? Appearance fees? I would wager that he makes way more than what you’re saying

I think this is what makes the sport of running so much more genuine (except dopers) and fulfilling. No one at the top level is doing it simply "for the money." For example, NBA and NFL players can bullshxt their way through a couple seasons and be set for life. However, the elites in running are doing it for the joy of competition and to push themselves to run faster than last time. I think the majority of elite runners do not take their lifestyle for granted, while the elites of other lucrative sports do simply because of the money involved. Many elite runners still have to work at least part-time to fully support themselves. How many elites in other sports do the same?

I would say what I brought up is still applicable. Prize money may not have to be as large if there are other awards/bonuses that athletes earn on top of that. Do dart players(athletes?) get any appearance fees or sponsor bonuses? It’s not always as simple as prize money

I understand what you're saying and I agree there isn't enough money in T&F, but if you include all of the champions of 20+ events and/or the prize money for all the placing athletes, that's a decent chunk of change. The prize pool is not equal to other sports because we have 20 1st places, not 1. His real equivalent would be $110,000 times 20+ which is a lot of money for 2 meets and doesn't include his sponsorship base pay, bonus, and the pay just showing up to certain meets.

Fine points but the median NFL salary is $860k and median career is 3.3 years. About $3 million career earnings and you’ll be hit with high taxes those years, less than $2 million after tax while often trying to keep up with the lifestyle of star teammates. It’s great to earn that much in your 20s, but that’s hardly comfortably “set for life” at that age if you don’t have other skills, and as that’s the median it means 50% end up making less than that. Do you think Lebron James is playing at 39 because he needs the money or because he loves the game? Running is also conducive to other jobs because you can realistically get it all in within 2 hours. I mean it’s commendable what they do but let’s not dismiss the passion of sportsmen in other endeavors or assume they’re all doing it for the money.

This is why I think in addition to being an individual champion in your event and winning that prize money. They should be an overall champion with a bigger prize and base it off of iaaf scoring table and award the highest scored performer of the championship with a bigger check.

They do. Poker players get insane appearance fees in the millions for certain events.

There were 20+ men's world champions at indoors. The money is spread out over a larger group of people.

You say a no name dart player but really who is Kerr? Are kids running out buying Kerr Pegasus or even talking about him? I coach a team that has quite a few running geeks on it that follow track and didnt hear the name mentioned once.....or ever.

Breaking: runners don’t make a living off of prize money.

I don't know who sponsors dart tournaments, but from my 2 minutes of Google it appears that gambling companies are funding the sport at least somewhat.

You'll never make good money in Western countries with running. Places like Dubai, India, China, Japan....is where the future is with big money deals. Fueled by oil and huuuge base of spectators.

Honestly, learn Hindi or Mandarin. Run some road races in those countries. Build a brand there. Do some local interviews in their native language. The national media there will pick you up and you can get some unique sponsorship opportunities. The cricket players there live like kings.
