That fisherman didn't really accomplish anything. He just got lucky that a larger than normal fish happened to bite his fish hook. So to say "he improved the WR" is very misleading.

You being surprised that the fish is bigger than normal is one thing. But comparing a fisherman catching a large fish to something that an athlete did with years of training isn't an accurate comparison.

So no, that fish story is not Beamonesque.

Not sure if Maryland has any Triploid trout (hatchery creations that can’t reproduce so they get huge as they don’t waste any energy fighting to reproduce). A lake in Alberta had a number escape from a hatchery a decade or two ago that resulted in some massive fish (48 pound world record).

Hopefully they tested the fish for the presence of lead weights - the doping of fishing.
