Taking your wife’s last name = based? Or cringe?

I took my wife's boyfriend's last name.

It would at least be better than having one of those dumb hyphenated combinations of last names. What happens when someone with a hyphenated last name goes to marry another person with a hyphenated last name? Do they make up a new last name or have a crazy long last name?

Getting married is not based let alone taking someone else's name.

Agree, but I do see why women take their husband's last name. You're starting a new family unit. Keeping their maiden name feels like they don't want to separate from dad and don't want to commit to the new family.

Changing names is barbaric - people are not property. In most Asian cultures, partners do not change their surnames when getting married.

It is a silly, benighted practice.

The only man I know who did this had a total b*stard of a father who abused the son and anyone else he could get his hands on, and ended up in prison. Unbelievably, the rest of the family stuck up for the dad "because he's family," so my friend took the wife's last name as a giant F U to his family in general and his father specifically. At least in that case, it was totally based.

The people I know who kept their maiden had major issues with their husband (one ended in a bitter divorce, the other was headed to divorce, but he got cancer)
