Kelvin Kiptum's final 2 training sessions - 35km long run on Thursday, 18.6 km fartlek on Saturday

We've subscribed to a bunch of Kenyan papers today to read all the articles on Kiptum. It's worth noting that The Nation talks about his final training sessions. He ran 35k long run on Thursday and then did an 18.6k fartlek on Saturday which he crushed apparently.

"I followed them in my car during Saturday's training session and midway, I told them to reduce the pace because the distance to be covered was still long. But he responded that 'coach, we are about to finish, and I told him it's OK," said said an assistant coach, Nahashon Kibon.

In hindsight, Kibon says it's weird as Kiptum insist they all take a picture together after Thursday's run.

"He told me, 'coach, you have helped me a lot.... come, let's take some photos' and added that 'photographs are a good treasure, and they remind you of the people."

The article also reveals he was training with Edward Cheserek and Sharon Lokedi (neither is in the photo). Article behind paywall here:

But of course if Kiptum hadn’t died then the coach might not have thought it was that “weird” that Kiptum requested that photos be taken. The death lends a significance to otherwise fairly trivial events. Just as so many posters are going to, and some already have, credit Kiptum with accomplishments which he may never have reached. All we know now is that Kiptum apparently never ran a poor marathon and that he likely still had some good or great ones to come. Anything else is pure conjecture. We saw greatness in Kiptum and Wanjiru, and we may have seen the best running they were capable of. After all, they were two of the best marathoners in history, clearly mentally tough and formidable. They left it on the roads. That is why they are held in such reverence.

I don't agree. Maybe he never took photos and the coach thought about it afterwards. I lost my fiance 4 years ago and I treasure every picture but we just didn't take many pics and then some people take pics all the time. It may mean nothing but who knows...
