Never understood where the 76ers name came from. Then I realized that 76 is the main highway that runs through Philly. They literally named their team after a highway. Is there a dumber team name in existence?

The Browns
The OP probably thinks the San Francisco 49ers are named after a highway too.
Or.....The Declaration of Independence being signed in Philly in 1776.....
Alan
I thought they were named after something San Francisco men did to each other.
Greased Poles had already been trademarked, so they went with sixers.

Dumb considering they aren't even in Kansas
Highways in the area were renamed to I-76 in the years leading to the 1976 Bicentennial. The USDOT didn't find evidence that the renaming was intentional for the bicentennial celebration, but that doesn't mean the highway wasn't named after 1776 either, otherwise why change it right there? I think the highway was named for Independence Year, just like the basketball team.
I always thought it was a reference to the American Revolution; Philly is home to the Continental Congress and the first American flag… think Spirit of ‘76

That's not so bad, naming your team after a highway is kinda cool actually. At least they aren't ashamed of what state they're in. What's lame is all the New Jersey-based teams that call themselves "New York"

I can't tell if you're trolling or the US history curriculum has failed us.
Cleveland Guardians named after a stupid looking statue on a bridge in town
The Philadelphia 95ers better?
