Ya, when he was 17 years old living at home. I think he was fine not making a bunch of money when he was 17. He's had a Nike contract his entire adult life, plus making prize money. He's never lived where he was both responsible for his own finances, and didn't have much money.

Easy to say money is not important when you are born in an above average family in one of the richest countries in the world.

This. It's easy to not worry about how you're paid when there's a string social safety net. It "sounds very American" to complain about money because a worker in America is far more susceptible to falling into poverty from job loss, injury, illness, etc. In America a pre-Nike runner like Jakob would've nearly needed bankruptcy to cover medical costs for plantar fasciitis.

He’s by far the most underpaid distance runner in the world. Others get paid less but they also suck.
