Simple - because he cheated. Nike gave their golden boy a shoe not available to all athletes in violation of the rules. Nike got around this by claiming it was a "prototype" of the Nike Streaks, when it was clearly an entirely different shoe. The two guys who beat him also had illegal shoes, but every athlete he beat, even the Nike athletes, didn't have them.
Honestly, Kipchoge technically cheated too, but at least he woulda won anyway. Not so with Rupp.

You went there, not me. As for "athletic prowess", Rupp is a much, much better athlete than Molly is. It's not even a contest, Rupp is much, much more accomplished and yet you don't worship his bronze like you worship Molly. I'm now seeing sexism.

Lol, everyone remembers Rupp’s bronze. It comes up very frequently. He’s been a bit out of the public eye while struggling with injuries in recent years, but Rupp might be the most talked about athlete in the history of Letsrun.

So did Clayton young and Conner mantz when they took up the top spots at NCAA’s 2019 10k, nobody else had next %’s to race in. That was actual contract money taken from people.
How about how NCAA schools not allowing non-Nike schools to compete with dragonfly’s in 2021? Nike schools were basically cheating when others couldn’t wear super shoes.

Rupp was certainly one of the most talked about runners on this site and for a long time he got more hate than anyone. Now he seems to be mostly accepted at this point.

Rupp was a highly trained and high profile athlete who we all expected a great things from. His bronze was a delight, but not a surprise. Plus, he caught plenty of shade for wearing a face mask well before covid:
Seidel was competing in her third marathon when she won bronze. She came completely out of left field and surprised everyone. Plus, she's from the "I've never heard of it" suburb of Milwaukee, Waukesha. And she also caught plenty of shade for sharing her ADD diagnosis and for seeking a therapeutic use exemption for Adderral.

Im not sure folks respect her more? I do think her bronze performance was a stretch more unexpected and that becomes legend to some degree. I remember her bronze more than Rupps.
Like deep down you think Rupp might be able to pull off a win if everything falls into place...it could happen (at his peak)! Then he gets bronze and you kind of forget about it?

Rupp was 8 years ago. Pre-covid. Might as well be ancient times.
Molly's is just three years ago, fresh in everyones mind. Plus Molly's story is a true underdog story. Rupp was the Nike golden boy given the full backing of Nike's best program and coach.
