I was wondering if he was bluffing about hiding some of his training since his stress reaction, but clearly he wasn’t. Surprised he was able to get in such high mileage despite the injury. Definitely is super fit.

The trial have just become a 2 man race. No names mentioned but the other runner has run 30 more miles than Mantz this month and more marathon specific workouts.

exactly. if the race was a half marathon, mantz would win, but it's not, it's a full marathon

He runs 120 miles a week. At that point, there's not much difference between running 6 or 7 days. some people probably think 6 days is better.

and if he doesn't run Sundays for religous reasons, good for him, because that is what works for him anyway

He has faded in the last 5k of all 3 marathons that he has run. All 3 marathons were below 50 degrees with no significant wind.

It hasn’t been working perfectly for him. Needs more mileage or maybe 7 days a week.

that's true, but in his first marathon he hardly slowed down, and it hardly counts anyway, because it was his first, in his second he got hypothermia, so that's a good excuse, and in his last one... yeah, he slowed down a lot for the last 5k. but he's been closing his recent workouts VERY hard, and has had 9 20+ mile long runs (including 2 25s 2 23s and 1 22) since chicago, which was 16 weeks ago. maybe he just hasn't been pacing his races well? he's been running for 15 years or so, does he need to do 30 something mile long runs?

Travel, taper, different weather and time zone, pressure, lack of experience, sickness…

plenty of things that could go wrong. Nothing is 100%. Strava doesn’t mean much either.

Will be an interesting race.

Great question. Mantz is a rare talent.

Maybe 2019 Leonard Korir? I think he overdid it going into the 2020 trials and hasn't been the same runner but his 2019 season was outstanding.

How else would he make money other than running? It isn't like he has a quality education despite 12 years of "college".
