Conner Mantz, Clayton Young and Jared Ward workout in Provo, Utah (26°F; 4,551ft) three weeks out from the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. The Workout:4 x ...
That is a beast of a workout. I am guessing the trails and sideroads hadn't been plowed? Looks like ice and snow, which isn't conducive to running 4:30 pace. I am guessing this location was a Plan B scenario.
Over the years, during hard winter training sessions, I've often had to run in similarly garbage conditions (as I'm sure you all have). Icy roads, next to traffic, just trying to get in a hard effort despite the [weather] hand that's been dealt. And I almost always think to myself, "Man, it must be nice to be a pro runner and never have to worry about this kinda sh1t." So I found this video to be endearing and a kind reminder that these guys and gals are humans too and sometimes just need to deal with it. Good stuff.

Yeah, bad weather the last couple of weeks. Usual paved trails for tempos are covered up (until this last weekend with the rain). Makes sense to do it on the roads as well- marathons are done on roads, not tracks.
I think they’d been wiser just to relocate to a track.
there are several times in that video Young’s elbows almost got clipped by a rear view mirror.
Welcome to Utah drivers: the most dangerous animal on the road. Run red lights but stop at yield signs. 60mph cruising in the left passing lane. Zero concept of spatial awareness. Texting in one hand and a stanley drinking cup in the other.
Great video, these guys are super-fit (AR Half shape, and I wonder if Mantz could push sub-59). Obviously the marathon is a different beast, but these guys have to be the chalk picks with Fauble as well.
As environmentalists have pointed out, it can be as dangerous to be outdoors behind a city bus -- walking or bicycling -- as it is to be in front of one. All the exhaust and smoke -- even when they have been reduced by clean-...
Interesting video and I'm wondering why these guys don't train in a place like Kenya in the winter time but obviously they have their reasons and I was wondering also and trying to assess the house prices of all those homes that they were running past and I may be way wrong but I would be estimating anywhere from 300,000 dollars right up to 1 million dollars and if I'm wrong I stand corrected. They look like decent neighbourhoods to be honest, but not not necessarily very upper class.

It's Provo, Utah or at least the general area. For one thing here, Mantz and Young's coach Ed Eyestone is also the BYU coach. So if they did a camp in Kenya, they would have to be coached remotely. As the video shows nicely, he definitely is a guy who likes to feel out how workouts are going, give and receive feedback, and adjust on the fly. For another, a trip to Kenya obviously is a major lifestyle change and a very long trip from the West-Coast or Mountain Region. I can see the pros and cons, but for most US pros who live at altitude the cons outweight the lack of winter weather.
Why are people acting like this is the first time it’s snowed? He’s lived there forever. It snows like this every year. He’s been doing workouts in snow and ice his whole life.
I love this video. Running isn’t perfect. Yes as pros they could be chasing the weather, training indoors on Woodways all kinds of stuff. There is something to be said about figuring it out and getting the work in.
The marathon is never perfect, and the best skill a marathoner can have is FEEL. How well do you really know yourself when everything is always perfect.

Why the hell would anyone go to Kenya to train? Parasites from the water and malaria are real threats.
Well this close to the trials it looks like he be better suffice to already be in Florida getting acclimated to the odd, unpredictable weather.
I understand wanting stay at altitude as long as possible but being a marathon and coming from snow and ice to 60-75ish degree weather of Florida could maybe be a little bit shocking?

Does anyone know what happened to Mantz’s training on Strava? He went from running 120mpw to taking 2 weeks off completely, and since then has been running like 60-70mpw. Is he not putting everything on Strava? Or is he nursing a niggle?
