if the reports are true that he was at 1:01:30 pace halfway through, stick a fork in him.
Blowing out some cobwebs, he'll be good to go come the day of the trials.
14:41, 14:30, 14:57, 15:17, 4:47 pace
He was certainly pretty gassed at the finish. Heavy legs.
I bet he is disappointed.
Ran the 2nd half of the race a minute slower (or more) than he had planned I would guess.
He was straining at the end. Hopefully he gets in a nice taper before Feb 3.
He's a proven racer, but a top 3 lock at the trials wouldn't be third American today.
ya i guess a saving grace would be if he was in heavy training this week and isn't even a little bit tapered for it.
otherwise, i am definitely worried about a guy dragging in the last half so badly off of a completely reasonable pace.
Galen Rupp splits
14:41 - 5k; 29:11 - 10k; 44:04 - 15k; 59:21 - 20k; 62:37 - Half Marathon
4:44 - 4:41 - 4:48 - 4:56 - 4:47 min/mile pace
1083 + Gold Label race points 2024 Houston Half Marathon
1180 points 2023 Chicago Marathon
Also he was actually 5th American, not 3rd

I would never count him out, but that wasn't a good optic.
I'm at the finish. He did not look comfortable.
Probably bears mentioning that buildup half marathon results have not really been predictive for Rupp in the past — ran 1:02ish times twice in 2017 before winning Chicago and getting 2nd in Boston. Similar before he ran 2:06:20 in Chicago a few years later.
i think the pacing issue is what concerns me most about this one but I am not writing him off yet because our men’s marathon field is weak as heck
Not sure about this . obviously a 61 would have been spot on . DNF at the Trials my guess

Is that true?
Any details on that?

Oh my God...you people..
Letsrun is literally the only place that would throw shade at Galen Rupp (in his mid to late 30s) for ONLY running a 1:02 and change???
It's less than 3 minutes off Ryan Hall's best at Houston, and we're grilling Rupp?
Who do you people think you are for real?
Way to go Galen
Some of you are absolutely pigs.
How does Stoppit Smith get away with calling fellow LRC users swine? A contemptible person with little redeeming social skills. He is never invited to parties because of his disagreeable personality. He lowers the enjoyment factor of communicating on LRC every time he posts. Even the mirrors in his home cringe when they have to reflect his unlikeness.
are we supposed to say he looked great and is in a strong position leading up to the trials? the reality is that he still has a chance because US marathoning is so weak, but he didn't look good today, and i think he'd tell you the same thing.
seeing and saying truth is not the same thing as throwing shade. im a fan. today's result saddens me a little.
Maybe someone can confirm but I believe most of the top runners had similar slow downs due to the wind. He did look pretty strained coming across the finish line but he's also a guy who you can see running 1:02-mid in heavy training & then being able to marathon close to that pace. I doubt the goal was to run super fast today. He ran almost 1:05 @ NYC (super windy, would have given it 60-90s) in March & then 2:08-high in Chicago in October.
I'm impressed with Simbassa & Estrada. Simbassa debuted in 2:10 in Prague in May. Went out close to 1:04-flat. Dk what the weather was like there. He's been doing well on the roads over the last two years. Definitely the kind of guy who could take a step forward and be in the 2:07-2:08 shape (maybe 2:09-2:10 actual time if it's hot/humid) that you might need to be in to finish top-3.
Half has a good stretch running due north into the wind. Was blowing about 10-15. Not awful, but will take some time off.
I saw Rupp around the 19k. He was working very hard. Not the same Rupp as the Olympic medal years.
