Runner girls: why has it never worked out?

I'm a runner-girl and I've dated runners and non-runners. I'm currently in a relationship with a non-runner and its the best relationship I've ever had. I wouldn't say I'm not interested in runners, but its just not something I'm necessarily looking for. It's a fun thing to bond over initially, but eventually the relationship should grow deeper than one singular common interest. I think it's more important to find a relationship where you are supportive of each others goal whether it is running or something else.

I have a friend on the other hand who seems to exclusively date runners, so I feel like that is something she is specifically looking for.

It's better to have a partner with similar beliefs (say, fitness or wanting kids), but that isn't doing the exact same thing. So instead of looking for a runner girl, find one who is into crossfit or volleyball or some other thing fitness related.

I've dated runners twice. One was a runner at a top school and ultimately disappointed at how slow I was, and the other person and I ran around the same times - but he was a bit insecure when I ran faster race times than him.

I think someone who is into general fitness but it's too rigid about it would work best for me.

I'd probably pedestal the sub 210 800m demographic of women above the other runners of course it's ssubjective.The pure sprinters are more prone to infidelity and the pure distance women need an abundance of free time and effort into training and recovery which correlates to less sex or effort sexually.

That's what's weird to me. Like so many people I know met as teammates or met through a local running club and made a great relationship out of it. It's especially weird for me since running is the basis of some of my best friendships, for both guys and gals, and it's never felt like we were only "running friends." But any date or dating app conversation with a runner girl always seems to struggle past the basic running conversations and get stuck there until it fizzles out.

One thing I noticed in my college running days was that us guys made running WAY more a part of our identity than the women, generally speaking. This was at a mid-pack conference finisher D3 school. I watched a lot of my buddies strike out with members of the women's team. I think the reasons were varied just like they would be among any other population. I'm one of the few that actually ended up dating (now married to) a member of the women's team. The thing is, even back then running was just the social context. We almost never talked "shop" about running. She would go to practice and do the workouts, race hard, etc. but that was about it. Kind of a waste since she was/is by far the more talented one in the relationship lol.

Anyway, I think running is a good way to bring potential couples together, but in my life I haven't noticed that it confers any greater success in forging lasting romance than anything else. Which does seem weird given how running forms such a big part of many of our lives, but what can you do? Wammin are mysterious creatures.

My wife and I were on the college team 30 years ago when we met.

Dated several runners on the women’s team and then married one. Must just be you.

Dated and married a runner on the women's xc team. Also 30 years ago. Still run and coach together. She's been much more consistent and more fit even though I took it much more "seriously" after college. I can still fake it through one run better and can still "keep up". Most of our kids have run (to varying degrees).

Imo, Running is great for experiences together and shared background, but not so much as a conversational topic (beyond "what did you do today and how'd you feel?"). I'm still interested in following HS and collegiate running, but my wife and kids don't really understand why. So, despite a lifetime of shared experience, I don't talk (much) about running (like who is running well, training theory, elite running, new equipment, etc) with my wife even though she would easily understand all of it.

And wasn't txrunnerg one of only a couple at that photo from the Worlds gathering? There were like 40 guys, with site mascot jamin front and center, and one or two women.

I wasn't at the World Champs this year.

The OP says things fizzle out after talking about running. Well, there's the issue. Just because someone is also into running doesn't mean that's the only thing they are into.

This is how I feel, too.
Dating a runner would be cool, but it’s not at all necessary. Not to mention the man is likely to be a good bit faster than me so it’s not really something we’d do together.

I have had better luck in long-term relationships with men who were active, but we did our own things. It just came with a level of respect for each other’s goals and time.

Ultimately, I would place higher value on a man’s personality traits/sense of humor, than if he runs.
