No chance. He doesn’t train consistent enough. He races like he trains. Inconsistent and flashy.
Anything can happen and I think he has a chance because he is obviously in good shape now (although in recent podcasts he has described this as less than peak fitness). CJ has also admitted in the past to losing focus in his training and needing an important race on his calendar to get in really good shape. I think his peak fitness in a race where he doesn't go out at a suicide pace is somewhere between Mantz and Fauble.
I’ve known CJ for years and have some insight into his training. While he has a reputation of being a workout tank, people on this site don’t seem to know he has an injury history dating back to high school (you can see a good amount of inconsistency on his TFRSS page if you dig in). The free-form nature of his training seems to keep him healthy and engaged. This may be the difference in “organization” between him and someone like Yuki. CJ has the discipline to rest away aches and pains but will also crush monster mileage and workouts without hesitation, as we all know. I’m honestly not sure what he would think about all this high/low mileage philosophy discourse… I personally feel like almost all of these marathoners just try to get in as much training without getting injured. Some guys are built for more, some for less, and sometimes the mileage varies at different points in one’s career/season.
But the REAL scoop comes from the horse’s mouth. CJ is going to go for the WIN at trials. This wasn’t the case in past years (or at least I didn’t hear). No time goal though due to the weather in Orlando.
