It might be slower than what you think since the other parts of the PT test are performed before the 2 mile. Going to guess he's still does it in under 9.
I would be more interested in pushups and situps. My best was 10 flat 2 mile, 85 situps and 73 pushups. At Benning on the dirt on the 500yd track of course in 1987.
He probably bagged it, not ran it as a race since he'd be doing actual training that day, right.
I don't know how the Army works but at Parris Island, at least in the early 2000's, a buddy of mine got the Iron Recruit or Iron Man award, some kind of award that distinguishes the person who did the best overall in the PFT test. If the Army had something like that you'd want to try to be the best out of everything and not just aim for the perfect score.
My buddy ran the 3 miles in mid 16's in his recruiting class and did enough in pull-ups and sit-ups to get the overall highest score. I'm sure there were others who just achieved a perfect score.

We don't do pushups or situps anymore. Well, we still do pushups but they are hand release T-pushups.
Nick Symmonds and Michael Jordan (former WCAP Steeplechaser) perform a version of it here:
The new Army Combat Fitness Test is comprised of six events. Each event is scored and has 100 points available. A perfect score is 600! I visited Camp Withyc...

Trust me, Chelimo has higher athletic priorities than a certificate that says he has the highest PT score in his platoon.

Chelimo probably suffers at the strength based events like the deadlift and power throw.

Interested in knowing how fast he ran the 2 mile part of the PT test.
Back in the 80's my best PT test was 92 pushups, 96 sit ups, and a 10:02 2 mile. Had several of my fellow soldiers ask if was planning to run in the Olympics. Would be interesting to see their reactions when Chelimo dropped an 8:40.
Military times are complete bs. The guys would always want to work out with me when I was around because they thought they were actually in good shape. Turns out the times and distances they were running were totally off and they never could hang. Who knew years of aerobic conditioning and being genetically more gifted trumped boot camp?
