they both just uploaded a vague training montage clip on instagram. No specifics but looks like a new group could be up and running well before trials!

We've been talking about Cole Hocker and Cooper Teare since "Your move, Centro"
I just assumed at some point, Cole and Cooper would go 1-2 in some Olympic trial...no matter who was one or two
I think a lot of us assumed the same. There was so much talk about "the shoes", because it was the first real season of racing since they came out. After NCAA indoors, though, Hocker had arrived. The hype around them didn't die down, because Hocker kept getting better, but then Teare kept beating Hocker every time they raced a 1500/mile. Nuguse outkicked them both, then soloed the NCAA record at ACCs, just to set the stage for nationals, where Hocker ran 3:35 with a 52 last lap (1:48 last 800), and Nuguse finished right behind him, to set the stage for USAs, where Hocker rose to beat the reigning Olympic champ with a massive kick (and he'd still never beaten Teare in a 1500/mile). It just looked like they were the future.
I think the Teare hype started dying down once he missed the 5k team. Hocker won the trials, went pro, and came 6th in the Olympics, saying he was one of the best in the world at age 20. Teare ran 3:50, got outkicked at NCAAs by Hocker, came 4th in the trials, went back to Oregon for an XC title, bombed, turned around and won a US title (without Hocker, Nuguse, or Centro healthy), got injured before Worlds, then had a shaky transition into BTC. Nothing nearly as iconic as Hocker.
There's only been 3 national championships since "Your move, Centro". Cole won the first, and Cooper won the second. It probably would've happened if Cooper had run the 1500m at the last trials, or if Cole hadn't been injured in 2022. It's unlikely to happen now that Nuguse is so good, but if you told me in 2021 that Hocker and Teare would outkick Nuguse in the Olympic trials, I'd have believed you. Cole has continued his excellence under Ben Thomas, and with Cooper coming back, I think things look great for them. I absolutely believe Hocker can reach Nuguse's level (at least to outkick him at nationals again), and I think Teare can at least get close.

Teare seems to be in the worst position. He's good at both the 1500m and 5000m but it's unclear which event he has the most potential at. He's not quite good enough to be a clear favorite to make teams in the 1500m and though he is a at about the same level in the 5000m, the 5000m is more competitive in the USA than the 1500m. So his dilemma is which event to focus on.
At one time I thought Hocker might end up being a 5000m guy but his improvement at 1500m combined with the competitiveness of the 5000m makes it clear that he'll probably never focus on the 5000m.
Teare needs a big breakthrough in one of those events or he could rapidly become irrelevant. And then there is always the gamble of moving to the steeplechase. Is Teare the 2020's version of Evan Jager?

When he was at BTC with Jager that was his opportunity, assuming he has talent for the steeple.
