Newbie question: are there markings for multiples of 10m distances between 0 and 100m on a standard track, like 10m, 20m, 30m, 40m, 50m, 60m, 70m, 80m, 90m? For example, if I want to run 40m sprints, how can I do that?

Difference between finish line and 60m start.

That sounds like a good idea, but when I was looking at this diagram https://worldathletics.org/download/download?filename=596848ce-6afe-4f00-8eb0-62a019ee215e.pdf&urlslug=Track%20and%20Field%20Facilities%20Manual%202019%20Edition%20-%20Marking%20Plan%20400m%20Standard%20Track
I couldn't find the 60m start. Could you explain to me where it is?
It’s actually more complicated than you may think.
try running 40m on a track
Just run 40y reps on the infield & get ready for the combine
Most of our tracks here in Australia have 10m segments from the 110m start all the way until the 60m start, sometimes to the 50m.
So that’s 50m or 60m with 10m markings.
If you want another alternative for 40m, it’s the last 400m green hurdle mark before the finish line.
For 40m, find the marking for the last hurdle for the 400m hurdles, which is 40m from the finish. The hurdle markings are usually color-coded, and the 400m hurdle marks are 35m apart, starting at 45m from the start, with the last one 40m from the finish.
For 50m, find the 400m hurdle mark halfway down the back stretch, which is 250m from the finish (so it would be 50m from the 200 start, or 50m after the 1500/300m start).
For 30m, use the 100m relay exchange zones (typically triangle markings).
For 60m, start at the 100m start, and finish at the last 400m hurdle mark.
For 70m, you can use the distance between 100m relay exchange zones, or you can start at the 110m hurdle start and finish at the last 400m hurdle mark.
I hope that helps.

this is awesome.
Does it need to be perfect? If not, run a full 30m relay exchange zone and eyeball another 10m. Mark it with a cone and you can easily be within a foot.
Startline and 60m start I meant 😀

Thank you very much, that's very helpful!

Usually not.

I think you mean between the 100m start and the 60m start.
The distance from the 60m start (if marked) to the finish line is of course 60m.

Excellent post.
The 400h markers on both stretches are very useful! (At least they're good for something. ;)
two suggestions
1) similar to what the aussie suggests, tracks in the US are often around american football fields, if it's turf you can see them year round, and even grass lines are often visible as dirt paths. take some sort of cones or other markers and use the yardlines. if you want to be semi-exact, 40m is about a yard shy of the 45 yards.
2) i did 300H and the distance between hurdles is 45m to hurdle 1, 35m between hurdles. marked by white notches on the edges of the lane lines, if memory serves. the 300H lines will start on the backstretch, schools don't necessarily have 400H marked.

personally i think running on grass is better for you, if you put in any volume. which gets you your yardlines most fields. track work to me is i want to do a time trial over a precise distance, or i am a sprinter whose body won't feel regular lap work. particularly in the GPS device era you don't need to run a track to go a set distance or know how far you just went.

This is great info! Thanks for posting. However...

Maybe I measured wrong, but I'm pretty sure that the hurdle mark on my local high school track is 255m from the finish (145m from the start). I measured with a measuring wheel. Maybe it's not a 400h mark?

Great! Have been either guessing or using yards on football field to mark out sprints for speed dev sessions. Any similar tips for doing 150m finishing on the straightaway?
