not long ago I left a suburb and started a small farm on acreage (it’s what I wanted). Now that I’m here a few years - I can say I’m not real happy with it. Can’t really run on country roads, things are a bit different out here. I don’t even know what I miss about it, just the culture of fitness maybe? Idk.
What makes you happy where you live? How did you figure it out?

I had lived in a city for most of my life, then had to move to the country for about seven years to take care of my mother. It was 30 miles one way to a gym. There were ditches all the way to any dirt or asphalt road that I could run on. So, if I wanted to run any distance safely I usually had to drive to a spot. Packs of dogs were present everywhere and often they would follow you! It was not the most fun I've had running. Plus my mom, because of her operations and a stroke, wanted me to sit with her and watch TV. My weight went from 190 to 210 immediately the first year and I've had problems reducing ever since.
Now I live in a nice little city again but some of the fitness habits stayed with me. I run and lift but do not play other sports as much. I would like to get that back in retirement. It is much more fun to live in a city! I think I have hit 200 pounds a few times but it is not the same as the 190 I had before in the weight room or the track. I am progressing though as this town has everything I need.

Where you live is never going to be the thing that fills the happiness hole. That comes from within.
I live in Tampa. Great city. So much life. Moved from RI, a lib state where the Dem loving unions run the show and virtue signaling is strong.
I live in Clearwater, other side of the Causeway from Tampa. Been here most of my life.
It’s a pretty great place to live, except for long runs from June through early October. It still beats running in sub-freezing temps.
Got in 12 miles this morning. It was great, but windy. I plan to buy a summer house somewhere cooler after my kids go to college, but I’ll keep this house here.
I live in Baltimore and constantly feel like I’ll be carjacked or mugged because of the out of control crime. I’ll be glad to leave this hellhole and have made plans to do so in the next 6 months - now I just need to wait out my current job.
I’ve been there- 28 month in the peace corps in Rwanda, to be exact. I’ve also lived in downtown Manhattan and Butte, MT. I’ll maintain my stance, and we can agree to disagree. I’ve lived it.
I live in the NC mountains half an hour from the nearest town. I can run 10 miles on the gravel roads around here and never see a car. Other than occasional gunfire from target practice, this place is very peaceful. I love it.
If we were to depict a logo of where I live it would be a potent, snow covered evergreen tree with an alpine sun in the background. Very specific individual shade of green.
So yes, i live somewhere where I personally could not have created it better!
No. I'm in the military and currently live in south Texas. I hate it. Traffic is terrible and it's hotter than hell the majority of the year. I miss seasons and snow.
Luckily, thanks to being in the military, I'll be getting out of here in 7 months and moving to a location I'll like a lot better.
Northern Colorado. The availability of mountain trails and scenic bike paths make running very enjoyable and varied. Downside is the population is exploding here and the roads were not designed for this much traffic.
I agree with the person who said that a location does not determine happiness. But it certainly plays a role. I can't imagine living anywhere else. I have lived in Los Angeles and alberta Canada. Way too cold in Canada for me and Los Angeles is too expensive and too congested. I think young people adapt far easier. When you are young, you go where the opportunities are. Finding a purpose is ultimately more important than where you live.
Canberra is good. 2 hours from the coast and the ski fields and great places to be physically active. Very little crime population 400,000 what more could you want.
