At least at my high school XC athletes tended to be the smartest by overall GPA. Kind of makes sense due to the mental toughness needed for being a good runner.
Reality is, VERY FEW people could ever solve the cube without assistance. I grew up when the cube was everywhere. Everyone had one. I can solve it - but I learned the patterns out of a book and memorized them like everyone else did. I'm sure Tuohy did the same. If you just handed a million people a cube and said solve it without any access to any assistance, I bet only a few could do it.
Sure they can. You realize that it is all memorized algorithms, right?
Put the average person who has never seen a Rubik's cube in a room with no internet and they would probably never be able to solve it. But give them access to the internet, they could memorize the algorithms and easily solve it in less than a day.
