Her team is essentially an all-star team. She is a great recruiter but not much of a coach. Her own daughter made improvements as soon as she got away from Mom. I guess you don't expect much improvement for Tuohy since Henes is such a great coach. Too bad. Adidas was hoping.
Not sure that an athlete that wants to go to the Olympics needs a coach that worships them. it’s cute for the college level but pros is a different world - and Kaitlyn has actually underperformed at her last two peak meets (outdoor nationals and fall xc nationals) - not sure that’s great coaching
You want an all-star team check the Stanford women's roster. Dont see them having 3 straight titles.
Elly Henes improved once she got to altitude. Like many runners do. She is also still exceptionally well coached with Mike Smith. You don't have to put Laurie Henes down to say that Smith is doing a great job with Elly Henes.
Provide an actual technical reason why she isn’t a good coach, beyond something anecdotal like “her daughter got better working with someone else”. How do you know for sure the coach of the reigning three-peat NCAA title team isn’t good at her job?
Let's not lie to ourselves. They got like a majority of the best girls from when Tuohy was in highschool it's an all-star team. Nothing wrong with that at all. For them to make the jump to the next level still requires great coaching.
On some level every recruiting class can be considered an "all-star team". I'd post the pr's /accolades of the recruiting class I was a part of but the times wouldn't look too good here post COVID/super spikes 😂

Exactly. There a few programs with higher rated recruiting classes than NC State over the past few years that are nowhere near the level of NC State in that time period. Tuohy and Chmiel were obviously very highly rated coming out of high school...but many of their key runners over the last few seasons were not that highly rated prior to getting to NC State, but were developed into great runners -- including Samantha Bush and and Ally Hays.

I listened to the interview. I don't think Henes worships Tuohy... But I agree that as a pro she needs someone focused on helping her excel as a professional.
Henes seems like a great XC team coach but Tuohy has faltered individually over the last 9 months. Henes seems to blame it on the NCAA 3 sport system and collegiate running schedule, but it could also be the training tbh.

Give Henes her flowers.
An all star team? Let's go back to classes 2019-2021. Let's look at the trajectories of the "all stars" who were recruited from that class, what schools they went to and how they panned out. I hate doing this because it puts other athletes on the spot and I don't think anyone is a failure, but as long as there's a whole thread bashing Henes a 3X NCAA XC Champion coach for no reason, we're doing this.

The idea that all you have to do is recruit to get a championship team is BS. How many "phenoms" went to college and their careers tanked? In fact it was the NORM for a high school phenom to never be heard from again in college and Tuohy is walking away with 4 NCAA titles, one in cross, and a pro contract. Besides Seidel, she is the only woman to win the national title both in HS and college.
I'm honestly not even that big of a henes fan but this thread pisses me off. What does she have to do to prove her coaching chops? 3X championship not enough. Being one of the first to nurture a high school phenom to future success? Salazar couldn't do that. neither could the Oregon coaches. But Henes did it.
