26th isn't terrible, she just faded.
Mud is kryptonite for milers. See Ritz v. Webb at footlocker Fla v. Track 10k a few years later.
She's not used to be challenged which is why she had a mental lapse today
got beat by an 8th grader
Didn’t someone say Brosnan was coaching her? That would explain it.
She ran and lost. It happens to every runner. It’s part of the learning process.
Engelhardt screwed up her pacing. At the 1k mark she was on 16:24 pace which is way too fast for a wet course in cold weather.
She probably thought "Forsyth and Leachman will go out fast, so I'll make sure to not go out quite as fast as they do."
But Forsyth and Leachman were running waaaaay too fast, so a little slower than those two was still way too fast for Engelhart.
Oh well, she still has track season where she should do great.
Obviously at this stage she is a much better 880/1600 runner. Does run the 3200 much. ( Dropped out at Brooks ) let's see how she progresses from here input. It's tough being the next big thing. Now everyone will talk about the 8tjbgrsderbthat finished top ten for the next five years.

I can't believe how poor the pacing was for most of these girls, unless it was the course. My son and I were following one of the local girls he knows. At the 1k mark she too was way faster than normal (1min faster in a 5k) and not in the top 80. Of course she suffered and finished more than a minute slower than usual as her 1k splits got almost a minute slower. But she'll no doubt learn from this great experience and be better next year.
