It was technically superior but didn't have the character development of the first one. The romance between Mav and Charlie in 86 was a huge part of the film, there wasn't one in this film. In fact, Jennifer Connelly's character wasn't even needed. The other pilots were not interesting like Ice, Slider, Viper, Jester and Goose were. I didn't care about them. I did like the scene in the sequel with Ice however.
It just means 24 out of 25 people liked the movie. It’s not like getting a 9.2 on IMDb. And 1 out of 25 people were like yourself and would have found Barbie more to their taste.
I mean, it was a Top Gun sequel. As far as that goes, it was great. If you were expecting an award winner with a deep, multi-layered and thought provoking plot then you were terribly misguided.

I wasn’t expecting an award winner but it was nominated for Best Picture. Am I still misguided?

Have you seen any of the nonsense released to theaters in the last decade ? Easily the most entertaining of the movies in a while , so while it's not a "Shawshank" the fact that it actually delivered what the trailers promised deserves an award.
I can't stand Tom Cruise but I found the movie HIGHLY entertaining. Great film in the theater and upon re-watch. The whole sequence at the end after getting shot down in enemy territory was brilliant. I also think fighter planes are cool.
The only good part of the Top Gun sequel was the Val Kilmer cameo (of sorts). The rest of the movie was just a painfully dull retread. Miles Teller is a good actor, but was terrible as Rooster. And the main plot device of Rooster and Maverick's conflict over the death of Rooster's father, Goose, was very poorly played out. The big mission at the end of the movie had a payoff that was so obvious that it just completely ruined the movie.

People have it at 99%, not surprising-great sequel, gave people what they wanted.
The OP meant the critic rating which is enormously surprising at 96%. Movie like this has as much as a 60% swing between critics and moviegoers. Critics don't like strong male leads, fun, no gay characters etc... I would have guessed 40-50 % on critics. But yes, it just means that 96% liked it, they didn't have to love it.
