Not crazy since that’s only 12s back from the leader at that point, and he was still out in 2:41. Over 10k that’s only making up 1.3sec per K for the last 9k.
And when it’s out that fast, most of the field just blew its wad early. He pumped a little slower

I was around 45th in a D3 regional meet at the one mile mark and won the race by 9 seconds. Also my last time at nationals I moved up about 160 places from the first mile to the finish. My brother took a video of me at the end of the first straightaway and I was dead last by quite a bit. Well he debuted in 2:10:45 (the results) or 2:10:47 (according to IAAF) yesterday.
What he did at NCAAs, super impressive. Those that have been in the race know how hard that is to move up such a dramatic amount.
His marathon performance is awesome.
