Although there's still 2 (possibly 3) more XC meets on the schedule for some Idaho runners, I don't think it's too early to start this talk.
There's a ton of talent returning this year, especially in 5A. For the distance event, the 8th fastest returners are:
Boys:
800m: 1:56.61
1600m: 4:21.05
3200m: 9:35.78
Girls:
800m: 2:18.42
1600m: 5:04.46
3200m: 11:12.85
The boys marks do not include Luke Athay, who didn't have a mark last year, and it doesn't include Helder's 2 mile time from NON. If you include those, the 8th fastest time is 9:29.99.
Heading into 2023, the returning 8th best marks were (pulled out Danny Simmons):
Boys:
800m: 1:57.89
1600m: 4:20.83
3200m: 9:30.74
Girls:
800m: 2:17.74
1600m: 5:10.11
3200m: 11:15.76
One of the more interesting things to note is that heading into last season, there were 2 boys returning with sub 9:20 3200m bests. This year, there are 5 including Athay. There are 36 boys with 3200m bests under 10:00 (including Sam Jensen, Pierce Richardson, and Thomas Stevens, who all did it in their HOKA 2 miles). In 2022, there were 54 boys coming back with sub 4:40 bests at 1600m. This year, there are 67 (Antonnen did it in his November mile, Athay returns, and Wyatt Carr matriculates to HS).
