How much does it cost for a college to operate an XC team?

Your best bet is meet with a coach or AD at a similar school in your athletic conference. There could be a lot of unseen expenses such as access to facilities, support staff, sports medicine, integration with track as a separate varsity sport, etc. Coaches sometimes have other assignments to create a full-time position with the school.

Part of the cost equation is what kind of infrastructure the college already has for intercollegiate athletics. If the school doesn't have much of an athletic department then you're going to have to factor in compliance personnel, athletic trainers, administrative support, sports information, etc. If it's a well established athletic department that has the bandwidth to add on an XC team then those kinds of costs are minimal.

The college I was at had 20 varsity programs and added Women's Ice Hockey. Existing staff and facilities were able to absorb the new team's needs without adding much or overtaxing anyone. On the other hand, a friend went to coach at a college that was just starting up an athletic department which meant they had to hire all those kinds of positions.

You need to be like Wisconsin, which has a middling football program that strings its fans along just enough to keep them interested and in turn can bankroll successful T&F and XC, and those teams' fans can enjoy all that for free. It's a great formula, really. Thanks, Barry!
