Pavel Kantorek died today in Prague. He was 86. Represented Czechoslovakia in the marathon in 1956, 1960, and 1964. He won Fukuoka in 1961 in 2:22:05. I think his marathon pr was 2:19:06 from the 1959 Ostrava Marathon.

His career overlapped with Emil Zatopek by a few years. His PR was 2:18:57. Hard to say what kind of shoes he was wearing back then. Pretty good career from 1951-1967.

I was guessing he must have known Zatopek. Thanks for the info.

Hard to imagine the state of foams back then. Maybe they used a thin piece of rubber glued to a thin slab of EVA?
Some references are saying EVA foam was first introduced into running shoes in the 1970’s. Back in the 1950’s, maybe foamed latex was available.
