The wife and I are planning a fall trip to Europe. Anyone have recommendations on getting cheap airfare? I saw the courier trick in EuroTrip, but I think we'll pass on that one. Any other ideas?

go to www.ba.com and sign up for their email special offers news letter. I've always seen the best sales through BA for flights from the US to London. If you want to go somewhere on the continent, you can get a cheap flight between London and everywhere else.
Personally, I always use cheapflights.com, cheaptickets.com, and travelzoo.com...
I am flying to London in early June. Got a pretty good deal on Virgin Atlantic. Did all the regular searches i.e. Orbitz, Cheap Tickets, Travelocity, Expedia, etc. One carrier which had some cheap fares was Iceland Air. Problem was you had to connect in Iceland.

And who's wife would that be?
skyauction.com
you could try the new MAXjet if you live near the DC area. all business class flights, with a promotional fare of $999 roundtrip to London.
i think it's just maxjet.com
Last summer I got a real cheap flight from O'Hare to Geneva on Kuwait Airways. It was like $628 during peak travel season.
Google "airline consolidators" and see what you come up with. Consolidated flights are a cheap and legit way to go. I had good luck with Fare Fox.
my family just flew from utah to south africa it cost $1,300 for each of them they flew air france to paris then to johannesburg with air france they actually bought flyer miles from other people that were not goping to use them it turned out cheeper. british airways is about double that? (but BA is much nicer!)
Check the actual site of the airline you wish to fly. I need to go to Africa in April and the airfare on expedia and travelocity was $3500. I got the same damn flight that Expedia was listing, but directly from South African Airlines for $1100.
$850 to london!! oy. expensive.
Anytime that's not the summer (May-Sept) you can get good fares to Europe. Multiple carriers, trying slightly different airports (Boston vs. Providence), looking directly at companies' websites in comparison to the Travelocity, Orbitz, etc.
I could have gotten roundtrip to France for in the high $300's, but I wanted insurance and to stay a bit longer, so the day I bought it it was $450 with all taxes and insurance included. This is for my spring break in March, 10 days long, Sat-Mon. It's also non-stop from Boston to Paris (AirFrance). Cheap is possible.
If you do something like Travelocity have it update you by e-mail, don't buy right away since you have so much time before the fall.
Travel on a Monday instead of the weekends (Fri-Sun). Take the morning flights. Also, fares are often cheaper if you actually purchase them midweek...
i think the $850 included lodging for roughly 4 days.
and while i think you are totally correct in pointing out things like leaving in the morning and on certain days to get the cheapest airfare, these tactics might be more costly in the end for those of us in the working world. sometimes it's better to pay $100-$200 more for airfare to maximize your time at your desired location vs. vacation days from work (which i guess you sort of acknowledge by saying you didn't buy the cheapest possible ticket for your trip either).
with lodging...gotcha.
Yeah that is definitely true. Sometime soon I need to start seeing things from another point of view besides "how can I not spend any money?"
Try Air Zoom if you are close to Canada. Don't forget all prices are Canadian.
