It’s a ballsy statement. Semenya and other DSD athletes are a newly acknowledged phenomenon that has always been present. It mostly affects regions where access to healthcare isn’t great (when it occurs in most advanced countries they treat it due to the high risk of testicular cancer). Some athletes of the past were likely DSD, but are not acknowledged as such.

I don't think Caster should be allowed to compete against women but I do have to laugh at the lack of self awareness of the OP and the lady he's quoting.

Caster is saying I can have non-functional, internal testicles and be a woman. You're saying she has a vagina and breasts but is a man and you think what she's saying is absurd and what you're saying is common sense.

People with Semenya's DSD - XY 5-ARD2 - don't have "non-functional" testes, though. They have normally-developed, functional testes that are in an atypical location, or were in an odd place when they were born. This is because their testes didn't descend into the scrotal sac when they were fetuses.

No matter where in the body they are located, the testes of persons with Semenya's DSD produce testosterone in the normal range for healthy males before birth, during male mini puberty of infancy, during and after puberty of adolescence, and in adulthood.

Because persons with Semenya's DSD have male DNA and male androgen receptors in good working order, their bodies respond to the massive amounts of testosterone their testes pump out as males customarily do too.

Semenya's DSD is caused by an enzyme deficiency - 5-ARD2 - that occurs in both sexes, but only affects the sex development in males. In females, 5-ARD does not result in a DSD. Semenya's condition is only a DSD in males.

During development in utero, Semenya's male-only DSD specifically interferes with normal development of two and only two parts of male sex anatomy - the penis and prostate. Later on in adolescence and adulthood, Semenya's DSD also impedes development of male-typical facial and body hair.

But the testes of persons with Semenya's male-only DSD are normally developed and functioning. The testes of males with 5-ARD pump out massive amounts of testosterone as testes customarily do - and in a good number of cases, they produce sperm too.

The poster does not get it, the statement is completely inaccurate. They are not "non-functional" testes. They produce testosterone and essentially give her the advantage of a male competing against females. I do have more sympathy for DSD situations than trans folks. But let's not lie and say her testes are inactive and dont help her. They are the primary reason for her dominance.

My opinion is that Carter Semenya is a man with male chromosomes, reproductive organs and internal structures whose sex was misdiagnosed based on superficial external features that look like a vagina, but aren't one and don't reproductively function as one.

Carter has naturally high testosterone levels that give her an unfair advantage when competing against females.
