Reading that article got me thinking. I don't get why runners just don't go "pro" in running and also go to the NCAA. The name of the rule is literally - Name, Image and Likeness. So if you are running pro for Nike- the NCAA isn't going to stop you. All they'd have to do is make the contract so nothing depends on how fast they run.

He's already part of a top running group in Kenya (2Running Club) and making good money from adidas/prize money. Same setup with Nelly Chepchirchir. For that reason, I doubt it for either of them. Most of the Kenyans that come over haven't hit it as big and are unsigned. I kinda wish Ishmael Kipkirui (made Worlds 5,000 after winning World Cross) would've gone the NCAA route, but he is signed with Rosa (Nike) so I assume that is off the table too. There was an rumor that Peninah Mutisya (1:58 Kenyan woman) was coming to the NCAA, but not sure what happened with her in general (possible she didn't have the require number of drug tests for Worlds or something else).

I know NIL isn't allowed to have bonuses for specific times, but can't they get around that by (not on paper, of course) saying something like "we can't give you a bonus for winning NCAAs, running under 1:42.5, 1:42.2, 1:42.0, etc, but wow! you ran a great race. Here's $100k to make an instagram post"

Heavens no! The NCAA has laid waste to enough young Kenyan talent so please leave him alone and try scouting in other places. I've never understood why their recruiters never go to Ethiopia.

How many Ethiopians speak English at the necessary level? While I agree with your point to some degree, the NCAA is a plenty good development system for 800/1500 runners. Since a bunch of young Kenyans struggle tactically (Etiang, Keter), I wonder if they’d be better off learning the ropes in the US. Probably less of a concern for the athletes that run fast enough to get a full tour of Europe, but some 3:34-3:37 young athletes get one/two races outside of Kenya all year if that.

The athlete is sort of exposed in that it can’t be guaranteed. But yeah, they could do that. Or run an ad featuring the champs. It is of back to the under the table deals of the 70s/80s.
