Sean Brosnan posted on Instagram, “In the airport. What can I answer?” Then he addressed a couple dozen questions over the next 16+ hours (long layover I guess :-) https://www.instagram.com/stories/realseanbrosnan/3217366511197825263/
Recapped here:
Q: Opinion on double threshold training with lactate meter.
Brosnan's answer: No double threshold! I would do Block Training with the right athletes
Q: What would you tell an athlete that can't translate his track times to good XC results
A: Learn to run on grass, dirt and hills. Stop doing key cross-country workouts on the track
Q: I am at 60 miles a week right now as a senior in High School. Over 60 this winter?
A: If it feels good. Running 60's your senior year is a great transition into college
Q: Are you planning to coach anywhere else
A: 100%
A: I saw the results and is the future. This guy will be a star. He also picked a great school to run for https://www.instagram.com/anthony.fasthorse/https://www.instagram.com/oregontf
Q: Favorite running brand for shoes and/or clothes
A: Nike @nikerunning
A: I just listened to a podcast with from and she said "Tough times, creates tougher people" (that's my new favorite)
(Ed: it was probably this podcast, A Runner’s Mind episode 4)https://www.instagram.com/sydney_thorvaldsonhttps://www.instagram.com/razorbacktfxc
Q: How do you help student athletes avoid burnout? I don't believe in the word burnout.
A: That's difficult to achieve
Q: Do you need a degree to coach college??
A: Yes I would say most have their graduate degree
Q: When will we see you coach again?
A: Soon!
Q: How far out from a big race like state or nationals would you have a difficult workout?
A: Most big races 12 days. A Championship would have a process to be ready. Running fast and winning races can be two different things
Q: What's the key thing that set the Young brothers apart from others in HS.
A: They listen and have the right attitude. I understand you have to be talented to run national records. I believe almost every school has national talent. It's about capitalizing on the things that matter. They are very aware of what it takes to be a great athlete. Being aware is not common
Q: What do you consider an easy run please ?
A: Everyone is different. For example Lex and Leo's easy day was 8 miles at 6:20-30 pace. Easy runs are different [than] recovery runs and training runs
Q: you still talk to the youngs and sahlmans?
A: Of course. They are great people
Q: Will you be coaching HS athletes again?
A: No I will not. Newbury Park was great and it was a chapter of my life I'll never forget.
Q: Mt. Sac is this weekend. What would you say the best approach is to the course.
A: Be carefull. That course is a mess.
Q: Predictions on where Grant Fisher goes after leaving Bowerman?
A: 🤔
Q: Still would love to coach under you, wherever you end up!
A: 🙏
Q: What did a long run look like for L&L?
A: In HS they ran soft surfaces and 12 miles. At the end of their HS career they did 14 mile twice only.
Q: Footlocker or nxn?
A: NXN all the way!
A: Definitely if my schedule allows! https://www.instagram.com/therunningschoolNY
Q: How's life right now for Sean Brosnan
A: Life is good. Lots of moving pieces and trying to put everything in place
Q: Will you continue coaching on the west coast?
A: That is the plan
Q: How do you motivate kids to not quit; when their coaches are the reason for their disdain
A: Get a new coach. Lots of great private coaches out there
A: I have never thought about it. I know Nico, Lex and Leo have all done it
Q: what's something you would say that all hs kids should know
A: You don't realize how fast you can be
Q: What's your opinion on paavo training
A: No clue what that is !?!?!?
Q: How much mileage were the sahlmans and young's doing?
A: 60's for most of them
Q: Best way to get recruited?
A: Run fast and have solid grades
Q: is your training based off of jack daniels
A: Nope
Q: If you weren't a runner where would you be
A: That's a great question. I'm not 100% sure because part of me couldn't imagine not having running in my life. I definitely would [do] something creative. I appreciate people who think outside the box.
A: I was proud of them and excited to see them reach their goals https://www.instagram.com/ailish.hawkins/https://www.instagram.com/tiffanysaxrunshttps://www.instagram.com/morgnyghttps://www.instagram.com/sam__mcdonnell
Q: Thoughts on "steady state" and potential benefits
A: I don't know what that exactly means. Different coaches use that term for different paces
Q: Who's been your favorite athlete to coach so far? I'm not sure I have a favorite.
A: I definitely have a least favorite (“Top secret” sticker)
Q: What's your "go to" breakfast
A: Anything with no Dairy
Q: Is it a good thing to train in carbon plated shoes? In terms of mechanics and foot strength
A: For workouts, yes!!!!
Q: What is your opinion of the 80/20 rule
A: Don't follow any "rule" Do what's best for you
Q: why don't you like the idea of double threshold
A: More like convince me why it's beneficial
Q: What was the coolest thing about NXN
A: The actual race!!!
Q: Can a easy run be too easy? Should I be at a certain heart rate for those runs?
A: I think so. When I say easy run that doesn't mean recovery run
Q: What are your thoughts on iron supplements for running?
A: Usually needed!
A: https://www.instagram.com/abdihamidnur
Q: What are the best things to improve recovery?
A: 1. Sleep 2. Iron 3. Hydration
A: If you can actually run that should be better. Biking is very quad dominant 👎
