Hello, mid-distance guy here. Focused on the 800m. My coach is an ex-4/8 who ran 49 on hurdles and 1:47 for two laps so I have the upmost respect for him...
now that cross country season as come to an end for me (not top 7) my coach has moved me over to rly start focusing on more 400/800 pretty early in October. I even did a 400m time trial in the middle of a 50 mile week to see where speed is and I ran 49 mid (decent for this time of year). Work outs are straight forward, low volume stuff like 600-400-200-400-600 at 1k pace with medium rest.
With all this said, I've been doubling almost every day easy miles in the morning to keep myself in the high 50 miles per week. I even did a half marathon long run 6 min pace (prolly won't go longer). If I didn't do these doubles in the morning (and Sunday long run) I would likely be at 25-35 miles per week depending on the week.
Am I wasting my Time with this easy mileage. I feel like for a moderately speedy guy I respond to the aerobic stuff pretty well... but for the 800m am I just wasting my team with these runs and extra mileage. The 800 itself when I race feels so damn anaerobic. should I continue trying to keep these extra east miles and 50 mile weeks in the winter through indoor season???
