I don't think he needs to include all the caveats, as he's simply addressing the popular belief - that working out first thing in the morning somehow leads to greater gains in fitness than working out in the middle of the day.

Maybe it's from watching too many Rocky films or listening too closely to people like David Goggins or Jocko Willink, but people do imbibe this misconception - and he's pushing back on that.

I agree that if it's more convenient/more enjoyable to workout in the morning, you should absolutely do that, but don't be under the impression that you're somehow "gaining an edge" on those working out later in the day.

yeah, you are making too much out of it. all he is saying is that if you can workout at a more convenient time, do so. there's no big benefit to working out at 5 am at the crack of dawn. most people HAVE to do that so they can fit the workout into their very busy lives, but it is not necessary.

Nobody EVER thought working out in the AM gives better fitness gains. He's trying to disprove something that nobody believed.

The idea of working out in the morning is that as a serious athlete the most important task of your day should be completed before others.

You don't have to start too early, but early enough to rest before your second run of the day.

If you don't start early enough, doubling can interfere with a "normal" eating/sleeping schedule.

(Assuming we are talking about serious runners here).

On a similar note, I believe Bakken has suggested that when doing double thresholds, a shorter gap between runs (4-6 hrs) is actually ideal. Different from just an easy mileage double. Although I don’t know many working runners that can fit that short of a gap between runs, for me it’s got to be at least 9-10 hrs apart.

Baseline body temperature varies over the day and for most people peak at around 2 pm in the afternoon - and as we know everything matters at some point to some other things - exactly how this matters to training probably varies as well but for starters injury risk at maximum intensity should be lower when warmer later in the day.

(Not gonna give up my morning runs though).

I think literally nobody believes they are gaining an edge. He's trying to evoke college kid / working / family man attitude who get up early because they have other shlit to do during the day and comparing it to pro athletes who can work out at their 'leisure' because it's their job.

None of those in that group think there's any magic to running early. We just do what we do because we have to.
