Because he's rich and it's like you and I buying a soda. Also, maybe she wanted to mess around with pole vault as a hobby since she used to be good at it. I haven't ran competitively in years, but still buy shoes and go for a jog once in awhile. If I was a former pole vaulter and had a pit in my backyard, your question would be valid.

She was still competing in 2017 when she started dating Fowler. The pole vault pit was given away around 3 years ago so only two or three years after she stopped competing.

I know one former vaulter who built a runway and a pit in their back yard. It was just for fun too. They were a good collegiate vaulter, but not even a NCAA qualifier. They just liked to vault. It was a pretty sweet setup too. The runway was all framed up and wooden.

I'm curious, how expensive is it to set up a pole vault pit in the backyard? Certainly it's unusual, but perhaps worth it for someone that enjoys pole vaulting
