Good lord the marathon is humbling. Guy goes through a whole training block, tapering, fastest course in the world, perfect weather… drops out @ 18 miles. I’d be devastated, and it’s only a hobby for me. Can’t imagine what he’s goin through
That's exactly the point where the gremlins attack your legs. It's an energy problem that's difficult to solve. He was probably humming along like a well-oiled machine, then suddenly, OUCH!, what the hell was that?
He won’t race anything until the trials in February. Now he’s rooting for other Americans to run fast times. He took a chance… tried for sub 2:08 and couldn’t make it happen. The DNF was the right move at that point.

Could be a blessing in disguise, he dropped out, so he could take another shot at a fast time in Valencia in December
Hopefully, in the Valencia marathon preview, and after we have talked about the serious contenders (the Africans), and then devote a couple of perfunctory lines about the Americans (the non-contenders), Scott F. won't be saying how he is in "2:07 or faster shape."
Disappointing for sure. But he was smart to take the DNF if he wasn’t feeling it today. Galen dropped out of 2018 Boston at the same point and came back two weeks later to run his PR in Prague.

Every marathon he’s run well in, he’s run even or negative split. I expected to check the results today to see a 64:20 first half and another top 10. Going out hard isn’t his strength. He’ll learn from it.
Easy to jump on Fauble and say he went out too fast. What actually happened is he started throwing-up at 30k. Not the story everybody in this thread is telling.
