He just ran a 2.02 .What are you talking about? He could have had a new WR if he didn't switch to racing mode/winning at 30K due to presence of Kindie. He was back to his previous form today actually. He could still dominate for another 2 to 3 years if he wants. How many other marathoners out there are running 2.02 while in racing mode ,I.e focusing on competition not the time?At the moment only Kiptum is his challenger at the 2.01/2.02 range.Paris will be a different game all together, it will be about winning factoring warm weather in Europe during 2024 Olympics. Eliud is doing just fine,he just need to choose carefully which spring marathon to run.
WTH! He just won another major in a great time. Most pro marathoners would take just one major win in their entire career. He has made great performances, seem mundane, which is incredible.
Ok, he’s certainly the best ever, but he’s on the fairly rapid downslope of his abilities. He bombed in Boston and has not run this slow in Berlin in 5 years. In fact, he was losing ground to a no name debutante yesterday at the end. The conditions were perfect and Assefa crushed the wr, but the great man barely broke 2:03. This version of EK is not likely beating Kiptum or Chebet in a championship race, and I don’t even think we will see this version by Paris. Ok, let’s see what happens with the others the rest of this fall and how they all do in the spring, but what I saw today was a magnificent athlete call on all his experience and grit , but one in the sunset of his career whose talent is depleted by age. The 2019 EK would have easily been under 2:01 yesterday. The summer 2024 EK might have ended up 3rd or 4th in 2:04.
Time for someone else, same winner all the time is boring
I wouldn’t say it’s boring for me; but more just really stale. It’s amplified by the fact that he bombed out on a non paced course with actual hills only recently. I suppose we’ll see in Paris. No human is limited…in paced time trials?
If anyone other than Kipchoge or Kiptum ran 2.02.42, they would have an MF thread with a hype train plus doping suspicions. Kipchoge has spoilt a lot of people such that him running 2.02.42 is now a disappointment. In Paris 2024, the only person that I feel can beat Kipchoge so far is Kiptum. Need to see some more from Chebet before lumping him with those 2.
Peak Kipchoge is gone. The WR nonsense needs to go away.
I can rally behind him just trying to win in Paris. Don't think it will happen but if he runs more sensible marathons maybe.
Crazy that this post has so many more upvotes that downvotes. Kipchoge set the world record just *last year*. His relatively poor Boston marathon (still finished sixth) came on a hilly course that's very unlike Berlin; in fact, the whole reason everyone was so interested in how he'd do is that there's a big difference between flat and hilly courses.
Whenever you have an older athlete, there are always people who are "prediction sniping" their decline. Eventually, you'll be right, and given Kipchoge's age, likely sooner rather than later. We all know this; it's not some special observation.
But Kipchoge already had a poor race, in London 2020, and followed that up with "only" a 2:04 early in 2021, before rebounding to win Olympic gold and break his own world record. It wasn't naive to think he might rebound then, and it's not naive now. And whenever he does enter a major decline, whether it's now or in the future, you're not a genius for predicting it.

I'm a Kenyan and a Kipchoge supporter; as the goat, he has a target on his back, or, more accurately, his records. However, his personal aspirations (should include a third Olympic gold) of breaking the world record in less than two hours, remains a physical and psychological barrier for other mortal humans. As the zen master, I hope he will know how to quit racing at the top of his game and concentrate on improving the sport. It's a shame that great sportsmen like Ali had to be mercilessly pummeled by opponents like Larry Holmes when he was clearly past his prime. With that being said, his support team, discipline, and training (with other greats like Faith Kipyegon) are superb and should provide him with several more good marathoning years, but age cannot be avoided forever.
literally only two people have ever in the history of marathon running have run faster than he has today.
utter poppycock

The man is ageing. He probably has another 2 to 3 years of bieng on top and then he hungs it up.
ISn't it normal to age?
He is foing superbly well for his age and beating almost everyone.
