Unfortunately his closest teammate was more than 30 seconds behind him. Would he be better off at another school where he can train with runners at his level?
Maybe not? At least in my experience, it's best to be the top guy in a group. Much easier to do workouts fast but relaxed/in control. It's too easy to push too hard trying to keep up with faster people and justify it in your head that you aren't really pushing too hard.
He is at the school that is right for him. He is an excellent student (not just lip service - he is the real deal) and Wake has a close knit and supportive academic environment that virtually everyone attending likes. Close to home and to his parents and family as well. While no doubt he has the potential to run professionally, this sport doesn’t nearly bring enough economically to make a matriculation decision based on running alone.
Great start for Hansen, but the challenge for freshmen always is to not burnout halfway through the season from college training and racing intensity. We'll see which freshman are looking strong in late November.
I never said it was not impressive, at all, what I said, is not THAT surprising. It's not to me, not THAT surprising, I thought he ran in the 8:30's but could not find it. I think and thought he would be a star, may not handle 10K at same level, but it is clear, he did his homework over the summer. On this course and this field Youngs..? You cannot make that even an okay day. But JWH, you are right, I understated the effort by Hansen, when I re analyzed the top 10(Murphy at 7 is a 3:39 7:45 guy) to even Langon at 12 who has just turned 19, and was one spot ahead of Gary Martin who ran well.Very strong field overall and especially up top.
this kid is one of the high school goats….why is anyone acting like this came out of nowhere. He has phenomenal teammates that have beat him in high school. The best is yet to come for this program.
Wake Forest was 5th at nattys last year (9 pts behind Stanford). Him being the #1 guy today is probably more a sign of how good he is than how bad the rest of his team is. Remember Nico Young was the #1 guy for NAU his freshman year, and they still won the title.

"One of the high school goats"? You've got to be joking. What big races did he win? What national records did he set? Please list them here.
I'm still waiting for someone to list all of the big races that Rocky won. I don't remember any. I remember him getting outkicked a number of times. I remember him running out of gas and falling down at Champs/Footlocker nationals.
Surely Rocky won something really important in order for you to think he is one of the goats? Please let us know what big races he won.
He wasn't the best high school runner last year, but he wasn't far off (3:58/8:35) and he looks to be the best legit college freshman xc runner in the country, ahead of all those guys who beat him last year.
