“You can run but you can’t hide “. Strange that Kerr won’t be able to ignore this from his psych. Interestingly, a number of WC Champs showed up and lost today (SCR, Lyles, Arop), and it doesn’t deflate their champion status.
Kerr would have shown up and run 3:44.6 and showed he’s awesome and a contender. Instead, avoids and now has to deal with questions about dodging for the next 9 months.
Well, except he does need to show up. this is one of the infuriating things about this sport: nobody wants to race the best at every meet to show they in fact ARE the best. no, instead they win the one then dodge their competitors so they can claim being the best. Jakob doesn’t dodge anyone. Like him or not. He loses occasionally but comes in second or third.
everyone else is inconsistent. By far, Jakob’s season is superior. He just didn’t win that ONE race. stuff happens.
I thought Jakob used his nbc interview to basically diss Kerr without mentioning him.
Paraphrasing: “I’m here to compete as much as possible. I’m not here to save myself for the bigger events. I’m here to win every event.”
He allowed that this could vary from athlete to athlete, but the message was clear that he philosophically thinks Kerr’s whole picking his spots and being OK with losing if he hits the champs right is an inferior one.
Kerr raced all season - peaked to be the world champ and then did the 5th Avenue mile and won. We saw how Jemma Reekie who also won last week faded very badly in the 800m last night and I think was nearly last. Maybe just sensible from Kerr.

If Kerr has any sense, he will dodge Jakob all the way until Paris. Don't let the mental scar heal.
The disrespect shown towards Kerr is ridiculous here. Not only did he beat Jakob when it mattered, he only lost to Nuguse by a whisker just a couple of weeks ago because he didn't dip and had ran a different way he normally does because he was chasing the British record. He also beat George Mills by 2 seconds and ran 3:48 in the rain just one week or so ago. Yet everybody is acting as though he would have finished about 4 seconds back on Saturday.
He also ran Zurich right after Worlds and lost to Nuguse, so he wasn't just win one and out. Jakob didn't go to Zurich.
Listened to him on a podcast and he was talking about everything he dialed in on this season, from nutrition to body work and I got the impression he had to be protective over a couple problem areas. Prob like any elite runner, so he was very matter of fact about it but since I don't remember the details it kind of came off like a pro runner saying "you know, my weak spots being my legs and feet.." but he sounds very attuned to his body. If he says he was worn out after Fifth Ave, he was worn out. There are so many injuries all around him, like Wightman's been out for a while, so that would make me cautious.
He doesn't need to show hes a contender... hes the reigning world champ.

Yes exactly. He talked about how his whole training and racing plan this year was designed to peak for the Worlds where he would go and lay it all out there. His earlier races in the season weren’t as good. He timed the peak to perfection.
Jakob did not go to Zurich and he didn’t do 5th Avenue. Athletes can’t do every single meet otherwise they’d get burnt out/injured.

Jakob doubled, so I think missing Zurich is pretty explicable. The Kerr defenders need to understand it’s OK. He clearly purposely dodged Jakob. He doesn’t race as much as Jakob. He doesn’t race at as high a level as Jakob. But they have different priorities and goals. You will see Jakob doubling at World Indoors, Europeans Champs and the Olympics. Will we see Kerr? Probably just in the Olympics with a couple Diamond Leagues, Millrose, a domestic 800/5k, and that’s about it.
