Appalled by young people’s fitness

What’s the problem? They are living to within 5 years of the longest lived peoples in the world and will live and (most probably) die in the wealthiest, most powerful country in the world.

I had a coworker tell me he had to force his kids to go play outside, which I thought was pretty insane since he’s an avid cyclist. I spent my entire childhood outside running around, riding bikes, playing tag, running after the dog, playing soccer, and on the monkey bars.

It's September second and he had baseball practice? That's unusual.

Me too. I’m a little older, and it was a great way to grow up.

Why?

I know, wasn’t it? But do you seriously think kids today will grow up and not feel the same and instead feel like they grew up so shîtty? No, they’ll figure out how to be happy and healthy. No point forcing them.

100% agree, I’m a 21 year old and I think my age group will be the last not completely consumed by social media / video game childhoods.

Sport participation is shrinking, gym class standards are lowering or being abolished, and spending 5 hours a day on tiktok is seriously causing manual onset ADHD. Not just the lack of focus but also dopamine and serotonin misfiring that can lead to depression/anxiety/social issues.

I have two younger brothers that were high level soccer players that just sit around and doomscroll and eat junk food all day now. In the last couple years they’ve both packed on pounds, lost their competitive edge, have had academic issues, and are failing to make teams 2-3 leagues lower than what they used to play at. The older of my younger brothers is seemingly becoming an Andrew tate incel type too. Lots of racism and sexism coming from him seemingly out of nowhere, and my youngest brother really looks up to him. It’s extremely unfortunate.

I seriously think we are moving towards a societal collapse. Housing is becoming unaffordable, people are refusing to work, they don’t have the willpower to learn skills that will increase their quality of life or their ability to get a job that will pay them a living income, my generation and younger are becoming EXTREMELY ignorant, racism is making a comeback in a big way, sexism is making a comeback, denial of basic science is making a comeback, religious tensions are rising..

^ These are the people that will inherit our already on the brink of collapse economy, run the workforce and rule the world in the decades to come. Lazy, hateful, brainwashed, gullible etc etc. people. Things are going to get really bad if we can’t make a change. And yes it absolutely does start with getting your kid off of their damn iPad and having them do something productive for their physical or mental health instead.

That is a very thoughtful post thank you. Fascinating though disturbing to hear about your brothers. I have noticed this in other young men as well. A strange loss of vitality as their lives revolve more and more around the next meme, video, or game. They lose ambition and drive. To be honest with you I notice it in myself.

No sign that young people have yet figured out how to be happy. Mental health problems, depression, suicide, drug use, are way up over the past decade.

It’s totally true. It’s extremely disturbing the mindsets our kids are falling into, I think much to the parents’ ignorance.

I also don’t want to act like I’m not part of the problem. I was a 3.5 GPA taking mostly honors and college classes during highschool guy, got a 31 on the ACT, all stuff predictive of a good college student, and I’ve turned into a pretty meh student after 2020. I’m very glad collegiate running forced me to keep my grades in check because I may have flunked out by now had it not. I honestly do not care much about school anymore, I do the bare minimum to get through everything required of me. I’m extremely thankful I’m passionate about maintaining my physical health and shooting to be fit enough to compete at a nationally competitive level. If I didn’t care for my health and wasn’t lucky enough to be able to perceive how bad the typical genZ lifestyle is, I could see myself becoming the same thing. In my room all the time, a college dropout not willing to get a job, and eating/drinking myself to death as many of my generation do.

I have the lazy loser mindset begging for me to let it take control, for many people my age and especially for those younger, it’s already fully taken control.

I’m assuming because you are a coach you may be a good deal older than my demographic and may not know how crazy these rabbitholes go.

Id look into these terms if you want to further lose hope in my generation, or maybe just to know what to look out for in the behavior of your kids and your athletes/students.

An alarming amount of kids 14-18 and 18-25 eat all of this nihilistic, hate inducing, philosophy up. It makes me genuinely sad.

Because Little Leagues don't play in September.
