So of course the possibility exists that you are correct, but elite athletes do get hurt, or struggle with motivation, or lack fitness or confidence, or worry about getting busted for PEDs, or don’t want to go to Hungary, or get burned out, and the list goes on, and we cannot assume that each American is in the same boat, just as we cannot assume each Kenyan is in the same boat.

If we learn one day that there was something fishy going on with US athletes bailing out on Worlds I would be far from stunned. I don't expect we'll ever find out and I don't ever accuse anyone of cheating just because I find something fishy looking. But I can see how suspicions are aroused.

I’ve lost track of the large number of Kenyans who’ve been caught doping recently. Far too many to track. That is an example of the appropriate usage of “many”.
