Kenya bought Faith Kipyegon a brand new house and gave her $35k, why?

    I never get why these third world countries consistently give their rish sports heroes big gifts. Yes, Faith Kipyegon is a national treasure. But she's also loaded by Kenyan standards. So why is the Kenyan govt buying her a 3-bedroom house and giving her 35k?

    Are they directly trying to remind the citizens that the best way to get rich is to be in the good graces of the govt? I just don't get it.

    PS. I also don't get why in the US we give rich-ass billionaires hundreds of millions of dollars. Truth be told, that bothers me more but I get why the politicians do that. They can keep a team in a city and get lots of votes as a result. And we don't give it directly to them, we normally do it in terms of a stadium subsidy. Here in Maryland, the Os and Ravens are each getting $600 million which is crazy to me.

    It's like if a very rich Celebrity wants to stay in a Hotel, lots of Hotels will try to get the Celebrity by letting them stay free. The Rich and/or Famous do not pay for things regular people have to, people who do not need it get things, those who do need it rarely get it

    The house (probably a condo/apartment) is part of an affordable housing scheme for the masses the government is trying to promote. She's essentially been co-opted into shilling a government project. She'll get a free house she'll probably never need. How is this bothering you? Let's talk about you guys' obsession with Kenya and how Ethiopia never gets the same attention.

    It's probably a tradition that's been carried on from the amateur days. Kip Keino was given mansions and sports cars, as was Bikile. They were also given 'full time jobs' in the police and army and didn't do a day's work and trained 12 hours a day when the likes of Peter Snell were having to run to and from work to log their miles. This tradition also continues, with Ridisha and Kiprop given police 'jobs' despite being in the top 0.001% of wealth in Kenya.

    Because she is a positive representation for their country on the international stage and an inspiration to many Kenyans. It's essentially an award for providing good national PR.

    Rojo, it is really bizarre, she is already wealthy from her contracts and winnings, and there are many Kenyan citizens living in dirt floor huts and their government gives her a house and 35K???????????? Insane.

    Because those teams bring in a lot of money to the local economy over time. Source: I used to work as busboy in the inner harbor back in the day and pulled in $1500 in one summer month just bussing tables.
