Could this explain his struggles in the sport since 2019?
"I did [get COVID] in December 2019 I got the sickest I've ever been [...] For the next year my lungs hurt but I didn't even think about it until like late COVID when people are like, 'Yeah, it affects your lungs'"
Long what victim? Excuses, excuses, excuses! Stop crying and start training properly and smart. No elite athlete lives in a van. You need proper rest to train at your full potential, and you cannot achieve that if you don't have a real normal bed. I get you want to be so cool, with the moustache, the long hair only at the back of the head and all that, ok, but a van??? Seriously? Come on!
I don't think his problem was the vaccine, but I also find it hard to believe he had Covid in December 2019. Of course, you can't prove he did or didn't since there were also no Covid vaccines back then, but almost no one had Covid back on Dec 2019. It's extraordinarily unlikely that he did. I'm sure he thinks he did but he probably just had some run of the mill cold or virus which may have affected him long-term. Or his problems could be something totall different.
Listening to his interview it sounds as though he needs to review Herb Elliot’s training and also focus on respiratory muscle training My guess is he is also more likely to be a tad dehydrated and has room to improve nutritionally to improve FEV1
Mild COPD far more likely this most obvious with sustained quality work
Right…because Covid booster shots were so prevalent back in 2019.

Yeah... Might be time to get refreshed on the current thinking of the pandemic origins. Likely an August/September 2019 accidental lab leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
As others have pointed out sleep is as much his job as training or nutrition. Trying to sleep in a van down by the river certainly does not help.
Although I do think there is something to the long term affects of covid. I had strange nose bleeds for a year afterwards and I never had nose bleeds before. It is a strange virus.
How many boosters did he have? “Long Covid” is code for vax damage.

He was running great in 2019.
On July 28, 2019 Engels won the 1500m final at the 2019 USATF Outdoor Championships. Engels ran a 3:44.93, beating out 2016 Olympic gold medalist Matthew Centrowitz by 0.04 seconds in a tactical race which displayed the advantage of commanding the race from the front in lane 1. On September 6, 2019 Engels finished 5th in the 1500 at the Diamond League final in Brussels, Belgium running a PR of 3:34.04. His time was under the Olympic Standard (3:35.00). Engels finished 10th in the IAAF World Championships 1500 final in Doha, Qatar on October 6, 2019. He faded out of medal contention in the last 600 meters but still ran 3:34.24, just .20 off his personal best
Kate Grace was struggling with long covid, but she also had a baby recently. Social accounts make it look like she's getting back into some base training right now. I hope she can get back on the track again, she was really clicking a couple years ago after switching to Bosshard and it was exciting to see.
