I thought Kenya was told to only pick clean runners for Budapest?

Ironically, Elijah might be the only 'clean' runner there. Though I wouldn't be surprised if he has realized his career is over if he doesn't get back on the juice immediately, and just goes for broke. Hasn't run under 3:36 since his return, but don't discount him dropping a sub 3:30 before Budapest.

While great the Kenya being clamped down on - I would say that for 30 years Ethiopians have been more obvious dopers than Kenyans. Why is it just then that are being clamped down on?

No Brian Komen who'd've definitely challenged for the win. The world has been denied the chance to experience a potential future world-beater. The Manangois, particularly George, fell off and aren't running like they should. Abel Kipsang has been wise to avoid most international meets after his poor start to the season. Hope the best version shows up for this.

Should be a great race. Munguti is definitely the dark horse to steal a spot. In great form and under the radar. Etyang’s talent can’t be disregarded either. I think it’s among the top 3 and those 2. Manangois and Simotwo not seeing enough form. Keter in great shape but not sure his finish is there yet. Possibly a year or two away.

Eliud Kipsang got 5th or 6th (can’t remember which) last year. It looks like he unfortunately will be unable to compete because of this no “amateur” stuff.

He’s run some good races this season but the world was given a chance to experience him in Ostrava and he laid an egg, finishing 12th.

Munguti has been faring well and has a pair of 3:34s, but a couple 3:34s and an impressive leg in the World XC mixed relay puts him in the land of promise for now. Someone could surprise, but let’s be honest, there are a clear top-3 coming into this race: Cheruiyot, Cheruiyot, and Kipsang.

I should just leave it alone, but the cumulative effect of the first 6 replies to this thread is disappointing. Yes, Kenya has a doping problem, but that doesn’t mean they’re incapable of producing fast clean runners. I don’t believe Kip Keino and Wilson Kiprugut were doping in the mid-sixties, and I don’t believe every one of the hundreds of elite runners Kenya has produced since were all doping. Timothy Cheruiyot has no suspicious progression, has been consistent for years on the circuit and in championships, and has passed a lot of drug tests in his career.

To be fair to Komen that was a bonkers race that probably should’ve been split into 2 hears. For an inexperienced runner with no pacing experience (which comes valuable in that sort of race), I’m not surprised he couldn’t find a spot and ran his worst race of the year. I’d say for Munguti, his SB is deceptive as you note his World XC race and then his Kenyan champs race easily beating Keter are his two best performances. Even pacing Jakobs 2-mile he looked very fit. No race yet to show off the full fitness quite yet, but I think he’s definitely in 3:32 shape if not 3:31.

Elijah Manangoi set to race later today in Portugal. Guess he might travel back for trials on Saturday, will be interested to see how he goes today but I think even he knows he is not expected to be in the top 6 or so at trials.

The trials only have drug tested athletes who have the WR standard .

Most events won’t take place or will have one one athlete.

Manangoi just wins in 3:37.4, looks exhausted.
