Boys NXN regionals 2023 which regions will be the fastest next year? which deserve at-large bid?

based on this the fastest regions will be in the following order-

1-southeast region

2-california region

3-mideast region

4-southwest region

5-northwest region

6-south region

7-heartland region

8-new york

Heartland you might be missing one of the Minnesota guys going sub 9. Also Manny Putz should be in the mix too so heartland should appear a little better then this list makes it out to be. Wayzata returns all but 1 and SPASH returns all so both should place higher at nationals then last season.

Which Heartland returner has a 8:54 PR?

Did you take Mechura’s 8:59 2-mile time and convert it to 3200?

That is how data works. If you do that for one region, do it for all.

I am surprised at SE.

Track =/= XC. Southwest, Northwest, and New York always overperform in the fall. South, Southeast, and to a lesser extent California tend to overperform in the spring.

Northwest should be a very strong region, with Crater one of the heavy favorites to win. Southwest and Southeast are similar regions, led by American Fork and Belen Jesuit. California will always be good, but this does appear to be a down year for them. Midwest is in a similar position. Heartland is actually looking really solid this year, Stevens Point should be a contender and they have good depth. Northeast and South should be the next two, they have no crazy strong teams but Southlake and CBA will probably be good. For once I’m actually in agreement that New York is likely the weakest region, they might end up being better than South but as of now not a single team really looks like a top 10 contender.

Obligatory time to merge NY with Northeast

Can someone explain why certain regions like the Southeast, an athlete is forced to pick which regional qualifier to compete in (Champs vs Nike) and have only 1 chance to qualify for a national meet while other regions like the South, athletes have the opportunity to compete in both?

The national meets for NXN and Champs are on different weekends, why can't the all NXR regionals do the same thing and host their qualifier the weekend before Champs?

The conventional thinking of outsiders is this:

- NXN and Champs are in competition for the best athletes. Neither is going to intentional do something to cede the best athletes.

- The day for Champs west is forced to coincide with NXN because the Cal XC season runs that late in the year.

- Other NXR dates are probably forced to be late in the year by other states having late seasons, hence the dates when NXR overlaps with Champs for some states.

I think on both the boys and girls side, the Southwest region is much better than it was last year, and will have two teams finish on the podium at NXN.

Wouldn’t be surprised if there is at least 1 at-large bid on both the boys and girls side

which sub 9 guy am I missing? I am pretty sure heartland only has 3 shively(8:50),scott (new balance outdoor 2 mile ran 8:57 converts to 8:54),mechura (converts to high 8:56-8:57).

I doubt Southeast will underperform in the fall.

They have way too many sub 9 guys in that region this year. The # of sub 9 guys is equivalent to the california combined with midwest the 2nd and 3rd with most sub 9s.

In the realm of meaningless data, I scored top 7 in a meet it a couple ways.

by speed rating:

NE 35

ME 54

SE 95

by 3200 times:

CA 53

SE 63

SW 88

In both the last two were NY then South.

Of course, none of that says much about how good the four best teams in each region will be.

I just said the Southeast will be in contention with Northwest and Southwest as the strongest region. It’s a simple fact that on average, the Southeast tends to have much more impressive track times than XC performances, for whatever reason. It doesn’t matter that they have a ton of sub-9:00 guys, if they lose to 9:05 guys from Heartland or New York at NXN. To be sure, it’s a strong region, but they are not going to dominate this fall at NXN or even Foot Locker (and you can quote me on that).

Cal and SE look best in scoring a meet on top 7 3200 times. NE and ME on speed ratings. It’ll be interesting to see what happens this fall.

At NXN, will any New York boys team beat any team outside of New York?

Scott and Mechura are the only MN sub-9 returners I can think of. And also Sutter and Wirth are two other sub-9:10 guys returning.

Doesn’t appear you have any other sub-9 MN guys missing here. Unless there’s rumors that a sub-9 guy moved to MN

People were saying the same crap last year... and NY ended up with a boys team in the top-10.

I know 1600 isn’t 5k XC, but Saratoga boys team returns 4:22, 4:22, 4:26, 4:29, 4:30.
Also another 1:55 800 guy, 9:56 3200 guy, and a 16:58 5k XC guy who was in the top 7 XC but didn’t run outdoor track.
Wonder how this looks on the national scale.

Their fastest 3200 returner, Brandriss, has never done XC or track until winter track
