bad coaching by brosnan, Mia had bad tactics. going to the front and slowing down drastically is a GREAT way to get tripped
O'Sullivan did seem to keep running right up on Barnett's heels and later Tuohy's heels once Barnett fell back. She stuck rught on the rail and kept creeping up on the inside of the leader who was in the middle of lane 1. Very unfortunate for Barnett. Tuohy was lucky not to get taken out by Barnett, and later by O'Sullivan.

Where is the video evidence of this ‘brake check’, because the video circling on this forum doesn’t show it.
Re-watch the event then pause it, and you can see O'Sullivan reaching out with that super long leg and step on Mia's forefoot, twice. Not her heel, but the outside of the front of Mia's foot.
She should watch the final from the stands and, over an hot dog and a Pepsi, ask Brosnan how she can improve next year. This contact sniveling is embarrassing to the sport.
Rubbin’ is racin’! The contact was incidental and O’Sullivan did no wrong. Racing at this level is tighter and more physical. I understand that some of you are upset that the cute blonde girl didn’t fare well and that your favorite coach doesn’t have a runner in the final. It will be OK. Grab a juice box and have Mom make you some pizza rolls.
After thinking about this a bit certainly O'Sullivan should not be DQ'd. And all those villainizing her should drop it. That type of thing happens all the time in championship races.
That said, if it were my athlete who had her foot clipped enough to cause her to stumble, I'd certainly think she should be moved through to the final... there would be really no harm to anyone for doing so and I am kinda surprised they didn't.
Regardless of whomever her coach is Barnett is one of the top 1500m athletes at the collegiate level and likely would have made it through to the finals with a clean trip. I feel bad for the kid.

as I recall the same sort of thing happened in Tokyo and they advanced the runner.

That's not the assumption. She was interfered with and we don't know how she would have placed otherwise. She should have the chance to show what she can do. That happens by advancing her.

I watched both her races as regionals and she really did a good job in both races there. She raced confidently and looked strong over the final 400 in both races.
Obviously this is just an opinion but I think she likely would have made it through to the final. I'm not saying she would have won or even scored in the final. Everyone at this level is very good. My take is that it wouldn't have hurt anyone to move her forward even though I agree that what happened to her happens all the time in racing. (Like I said, I just kind of feel bad for her after thinking about it.). It's just an opinion though, I have no dog in this fight.
OK, but what's the logic? If I am in the top 3-5 on the third lap of a 5K and get tripped (not intentionally shoved, impeded, singlet grabbed, etc.), should I get auto-advanced to the final on a protest?
In cycling, a crash in the final 3K of a race means that everyone in the peloton is awarded the same time. They don't nullify the results or award extra sprint points to the crashed rider because he could have possibly won the stage.
Does track have any rules for this situation? If the foul is obvious, then DQ the perp and advance the aggrieved party. If it happened with less than 75% of the distance completed, then it's just an unfortunate incident unless an obvious violation took place.
