The QOL benefits of WFH significant, you have that right.
You can now easily find a corporate gig where you WFH 4 days per week, roll out of bed at 8.40 to start at 9, have a leisurely breakfast whilst beginning your work day, are able to take care of domestic chores in down moments, prior to clocking off at 4-5 most days, hitting the gym, giving your emails a check whilst there, and then again at 7. I know guys running significant projects for solid 6 figure salaries from their houses in the country, if not from abroad. All the while productivity is actually up.
Compare that to waking up at 6.45, going through the hassle of preparing for the office, getting on a packed train that costs you thousands of £ per year, all to sit in an office all day. Back through the door at 7pm, knackered, no cooking or household chores done, no exercise done etc. And if you do want to live closer to work you’re paying stupid money to live in the middle of a major city.
But you’re not putting the genie back in the bottle. If you can’t offer me 2 WFH days, minimum, with paid travel, then I’ll work elsewhere. Equally, the market in sectors that can’t provide WFH opportunities need to figure out a way to respond.
This is also why I can’t fathom kids who are leaving university now and going into things that require significant face time. I have friends in finance, consulting and law who are working literally over double my hours, making well under double my pay, are forced to live in central London.
